How to tell if a child is gifted?

Agree with sleepy. Ask the school to arrange for one, since the teachers too found him bright. Moe has the best resources andif there be any action required, they'll follow up from there. Alternatively, go call any clinic or hospital for a referral to a psychologist.

If he is bored, bring him to the zoo, hv him read up about the animals and draw them. Take photos and arrange into a beautiful sketch book.

Publish a nice book jointly with him. Start a blog, create a cartoon character and write stories around the character. Buy a good camera and capture the birds in action, do research on Singapore birds. Go visit the war memorials and read up on Hitler and his secret forces. Play ww2 games at home. Go to China town and drink tea, talk about the cultures one at a time. I would also bring my kids to Mrs Lee's wake and point out how as girls she's a perfect role model.

Go play basketball in the neighbourhood, catch some earthworms and talk about their contributions to us. Look at the haze and read newspapers about its cause and effects.

If he is bored in school, he doesn't hv to be bored elsewhere. And if my kid is bored in school, I'll make sure he has fun at home. And, I'll remind them that it is good to be bored once in a while. For, it is only when you have nothing to do and allowed to be bored that creative ideas come about.

That's why, the professors in the universities have few classes and does research and thinking most of the time. It is during these thinking and boring times that great discoveries are made! I know that for a fact.

Thanks for sharing ! Very interesting. My boy actually fits into many of the descriptions of the creative thinker, especially these :

Daydreams; may seem off task
Initiates more projects that will ever be completed
Questions the need for mastery :lol:

lauren, even so, at least she’s ahead by 1 year and is being challenged. i think its better than going to P1 and being bored in class.

More ideas of what to do when your child is bored :


1. Get him an origami book and ask him to figure out how to fold all those complicated objects without asking you

2. Give him a map and compass, and ask him to bring you somewhere you have never been to

3. Bake cupcakes and cookies, or make jellies

4. Get him air dry clay and ask him to make roses out of it

5. When he tells you that he is bored, just stare at him blankly. He will have to figure out what to do next This is a very important life skill !

Gosh, they even have the cheek to tell you to google it yourself?? But you did pay! With your taxes! You should have thundered - It's MY tax money that's paying for YOUR salary!

Plus it's the school that wanted to do it, it's not as if you demanded for it. Once they did it, it's only right that they give you the proper information.

We pay our taxes and still get such cheap skate treatment from govt, sheesh.

Wow, your Chinese is very good! I can only think of 一山还有一山高

I shared with you before about the first time I attended my dd's ashr ceremony (many years ago), there were hundreds of children ahead of their school year! The record holder goes to a K2 girl who is 9 years ahead of her school year :!: It was a jaw dropping reality check and I have concluded every since mine are definitely no where near that league

I do not harbour any expectation they must be top this top that. I never top this top that anyway. I always preach 'no matter how clever you are, you need to put in sufficient effort, even Beethoven practiced piano for hours everyday, there's simply no short cut in life.' So that goes for whatever they endeavor, be it academic or non academics. 'Show me your positive attitude!' Although they heard me loud and clear, they do not necessary always practice what I preach every time :lol:

But hor, my MOE report was very, very detailed. In fact, the most comprehensive one I ever gotten. I also didn't pay for it. but I waited 9 months for this report... by which time, things have changed :? and my son has changed, too.
