How to tell if a child is gifted?

I shared with you before about the first time I attended my dd's ashr ceremony (many years ago), there were hundreds of children ahead of their school year! The record holder goes to a K2 girl who is 9 years ahead of her school year :!: It was a jaw dropping reality check and I have concluded every since mine are definitely no where near that league

I do not harbour any expectation they must be top this top that. I never top this top that anyway. I always preach 'no matter how clever you are, you need to put in sufficient effort, even Beethoven practiced piano for hours everyday, there's simply no short cut in life.' So that goes for whatever they endeavor, be it academic or non academics. 'Show me your positive attitude!' Although they heard me loud and clear, they do not necessary always practice what I preach every time :lol:

Gosh, they even have the cheek to tell you to google it yourself?? But you did pay! With your taxes! You should have thundered - It's MY tax money that's paying for YOUR salary!

Plus it's the school that wanted to do it, it's not as if you demanded for it. Once they did it, it's only right that they give you the proper information.

We pay our taxes and still get such cheap skate treatment from govt, sheesh.

But hor, my MOE report was very, very detailed. In fact, the most comprehensive one I ever gotten. I also didn't pay for it. but I waited 9 months for this report... by which time, things have changed :? and my son has changed, too.

Thanks for sharing ! Very interesting. My boy actually fits into many of the descriptions of the creative thinker, especially these :

Daydreams; may seem off task
Initiates more projects that will ever be completed
Questions the need for mastery :lol:

Wa! I like your table. I know all my kids don't fall into the high achiever column, no one is interested in getting As - including me... they straddle between the last two columns.

Ha Ha!!! How true! Kids need to learn to be bored. I second that! No excuses. They cannot expect to be entertained all the time. There are books around all the time - go read the 100th time, go stare at the clouds or the sunset, go count the number of pairs of shoes in the closet, go pack your room!!! The last one is extremely important!

Because they reserve resources for the truly exceptional ones.

I can easily guess why we only receive one page report and get shoo off :idea: - her IQ results not impressive enough loh :lol:

My dd IQ test was done in school, initiated by school to identify learning pattern or something like that, can't remember exactly what they told me. Didn't occur to me to send her for IQ test before. Since it's free, I just let her go loh

As to what happen next.... er, nothing happens. Still in same class, doing same thing eh. We were given a one page report with raw data, I also don't know how to interpret. If tested externally, I suppose there should be detailed write up and recommendations

By the way, I read at another forum a boy similarly tested in school was asked to skip level. Wow!

May I know is the test anindividual test? Cos' MOE asked us to submit a pychologist report and sample work before tjhey will do anything. This is when I called and us if we should wait for the teachers to identify them and inform MOE.

But that 'free' IQ test didn't do anything for us eh. Just a piece of paper for souvenir

Tested gifted? What are your plans? Skip levels?

Seriously, I'm abt at the desperate dead end ! And struggling to \" keep alive \" our situation.

Just yesterday, my dear son said he wanna join student care cause some of his friends are there. With the idea that he could play play play with them, then mummy come fetch him home in evening to eat home cooked food ! ( he prefers to eat in then out )

I believed that he's really doing all these not for my attention, but cause he's really bored at school, looking for something interesting to do. :stupid:

I chose the clinic cos' they can administer the SB test. My DS is more non-verbal. The other WSC IV is more for verbal talented.

After the test, then I know only SB LM will test beyond score over 160. So cannot prove degree of giftedness. Like what another mom mentioned here, nobody do the SB LM version in Singapore.

And that tjhere no pychologist here who specialized in tesring gifrness.

However. I did learn more from the report which I think is useful.


Like what other mommies suggested, to take IQ tesr in school first.

Mine is definitely non-verbal. No wonder she sank at VCI
