I think it depends on whether the hamster has a companion. I noticed that their appetites are pretty good when I had a pair of hamsters... had to top up the food every 2 days. Ever since one died, I noticed the remaining one's appetite has dropped drastically... I top up only once every 5 days.
My dd walk past and made the following comments :

\"He stupid ah. 2 of course eat more than 1 lah. The 1 that died must be the bigger eater thats why top up every 5 days instead of 4 lah! The more one eats the faster one dies - law of conservation of food. Thats why it died first - food quota used up already. :P\"

Seriously, those were remarks from my dd. No offence please Chief. Just a joke. :imsorry:

Kekekke... yeah, that's what I thought too earlier, but I think it has more to do with the hamster not having any more competition for the food. Hamsters are supposed to be hoarders - I don't see this particular hamster hoarding any more, it just sits and eats at the bowl.

My hamster’s appetite is small and thus I decided to leave lesser dried food in the bowl and top up when it gets lower, so that the food remains fresh.

Sometimes, it brings its food into its nest. It is really cute.

Any recommended method to toilet trained the hamster or is an impossible task?

            Yeap, same here.
I top up the food once in 2-3 days to ensure it is fresh.
The water also i change it once in 2 days.
Some of my hamsters toilet train themselves, especially the female ones.
I notice the small depression in the cage is usually wet when i clear the cage.

              Starlight,

Try putting 2 sand toilet in the cage and see if it help.
THis pearl boi is a lay back hamster and was fatter than when it first arrived, some auto train and pee in the sand toilet,
some will take a while. You can try with different containers with sand hopefully it help itself and when it start peeing in the sand he will carry on this habit,

As with the food, good idea to give little and top up so food stay fresh, some hamster also like to pick what they want to eat and leave those they dont like in the bowl unless there is nothing to eat. Feed fresh veg, green one best,
no cabbage or broad bean- toxic to them.

Ask DD read some hamster forum which also have good info on hamster keeping and sharing of ideas.

good luck , have fun

                Hi kiddo,

This fellow (named Humphrey) is real curious and alert! When dd puts a new toy inside his cage, he will sniff around. We took out the big wheel because he likes to hide UNDER the wheel!
He likes to hide in his \"den\"!
So far, we saw only the black poo and yet to see his pee. Most of the poo is in the sand toilet. He likes to go into the sand bath to do digging!
Dd just told me he loved the green leaves but probably not the stalk.
Does it hide in his den a lot?
With the exam over, dd can now faces Humphrey day and night!

                  Hello,

Need advice on the bed linen for the hamsters.
What is the recommended economical brand/type of bed linen?
                  Thanks.

Presently i am using the recycled paper type with sodium bicarbonate which absorbs odour. Although it is more expensive but it is really lasting. This is the first time i am using it and it has been almost a month, and i have not changed the bedding and still no bad smell!
I noticed that my hamsters get flustered each time i clean their cages as the smell is different so they get stressed out. Now that they are so old, i am happy to have found this bedding so i do not have to disturb them too often.

It is Living World Fresh N Comfy with sodium bicarbonate.
I bought it at Pet Lover's Centre. The large one cost about $28, can't remember the exact price.
