no careless mistakes whatsoever.
Is your dd by nature a careful person? Or you trained her to be careful?
Most of us have kids who are careless, if you can share your how-to-be-careful strategy, we will be really elated

Ms younger DS also in P1, but she didn't do as well in SA2. All careless mistakes... sigh.., I've tried my best to coach her to be less careless, but still careless... I feel quite bad abt it but went through with her the careless mistakes and she admitted she overlooked. Can u believe it she say she has eyesight problem for some questions! dunno to laugh or to be angry. :stupid:
Agreed with you on careless part. Same with DS.
Thanks for the info.prisnkc:

Hi Prisnkc, its YuRen tuition centre. They used to be located at B1 but they have shifted to 4th level near the bridge. Which level is yr darling?
FYi, they are closed from 5Nov to 13Nov and 23 to 31Dec.
My DS is in P1, overall he should have done better for SA2 than SA1 (based on the Paper 2 papers he brought back).
DS may be able to get full marks for CL P2 if he has not been careless with no of strokes and writing (he did not join the lines properly).
EL P2 pull down by comprehension and sentence making (careless - copy wrongly, which become whick etc)
My DS is in W1. Which class is your DD?
Btw, can anyone give comments between Hua Cheng, Yu Ren and Han Language for CL? DS currently under Han but I find it a little too simple. -
SA2 papers will be released next week…report books the week after.
In the meantime, I am going to sweat it out…hopefully to release the frustrations and tensed up muscles in the shoulder area. -

We tried Hans @ BTSC since start of this year for Compo & Compreh and Term 2 for Enrichment. Found their std not on par with PH. So stopped after the terms are over.
Now with Hua Cheng (since start of term 3). Afternoon lessons. After sch dismissal, eat lunch at nearby hawker centre, then go for tuition. I see improvement in my boy's weekly spelling test. Hv not seen his SA2 paper yet, so cant tell whether the tuition helped in other sections.
A friend recommended YuRen @ Beauty World, heard got waiting list. Timing also does not suit us. -
I would need to focus more on son’s CL comprehension open-ended next yr…or it will continue to pull him down with passages getting tougher every year.

my DD is in F1. Same issue with CN P2, 1 mark gone due to careless mistake… sigh.
I hv no experience with Hua Cheng. Comparing Han and YR, Han is too simple. -
A classmate's mum called me to inform me next week got sports activities for P3, Tues, Thurs, Fri?
She is not sure if the activites are full day. Any mum can confirm next week sch programmes?
My boy has stopped wheezing but doc advised no physical activities. So maybe next week just go back to sch to collect test papers, return test papers. Wow, this is first time we have an early sch hols in place
Did someone ans my prayer on keeping my boy at home??? -

Yes, three days sports activities. if I am not wrong, it is a full day program, until 12:00. my boy is very happy about it. -
By the way, sometime back someone mention PH is looking at \"cottage\" basis approach -- i.e. mixing strong & weak student rather that putting all elite in one class. Did anyone heard that for P1 this year, the class will move up together to P2 rather than doing streaming?
This is not an ideal arrangement for upper pri levels.
Maybe can work out for P2 only since many P1 children are still in the honeymoon period and parents are unaware of the high std in PH.
It is really difficult to cater to pupils with varied capabilities. When my elder boy was in P3 in BPPS, he was not challenged in sch and had refused to work on more challenging tasks (given to him by me) simply becos the sch wont be testing those. The internal drive to excel is lacking.
I wld prefer subject banding as early as possible.
I am not too sure about this but i think this is how it will work for \"collage\" class. allocation of class will be based on \"collage\" approach and they will stay together as a class for certain subjects....apart from that, they will do subject banding again...maybe for subject likes maths and CL...for this lesson, the kids will go to different classes based on their abilities.... -

I don't think my dd is careful by nature. At times, she does make careless mistakes. The most effective way for her is to make the mistakes, and then learn from them. Then, hopefully, she doesn't repeat them at the crunch of the moment.
I can share what I did with my dd but it's definitely not fullproof. Furthermore, she had only gone thru two years of exams so can't be sure whether she can still be as careful for more difficult exams. Every child has his/her own learning method. First of all, I need to recognise the mistake as a CARELESS mistake and not due to misconceptions, impulse to complete work (rushing) or a disability (A friend's ds was diagnosed with dyslexia at P5! Before that, they just thought that he was careless in his work.). Next, make sure she is 100% clear of her work, and competent. Then, she must have sufficient practices and exposure to the same types of questions that she usually makes mistakes in. In this way, she can focus on the questions and must learn not to make the same mistakes again. I will run thru exam papers (she doesn't need to do all the papers for top schools) for questions that I know my dd will usually make mistakes in, compile them and let her do them. Lastly, but most importantly, she has to remember that exams will only end when the invigilator says, \"Time's up. Pens down!\". If not, every second counts, and every second used for shaking legs will be wasted.
Below are my advice to my dd:~
For EL exam:
1) For Listening compre, LISTEN and answer carefully cos once it's over, you can never be sure whether you can check again and change your answers.
2) Check your weakest area first (Open-ended comprehension) and if possible, more than once. Read between the lines what each question is asking and not just read quickly and answer quickly. More haste, less speed. Give each question its worth of 2 marks. Scan thru the passage to ensure you have given all the points to the answer, cos sometimes answers can be found in different paras.
3) For Grammar component, read the whole sentence, and identify the key element for giving the answer. Don't just focus on the subject next to the blank. For eg. One of the ducks ______ swimming in the pond. If not careful, you'll choose a plural verb agreement because of the word \"ducks\".
4) For Rearranging words to sentence, write the numbers above each word, copy out the sentence according to the numbers. Make sure the question mark is affixed if the words form a question.
5) Don't rush to complete. Check your answer before moving on to the next question.
6) Redo the whole paper again for the remaining time.
For Math exam:
1) Read the question again to ensure you've answered TO the question. Sometimes, young kids have a tendency to conclude their answers after one or two steps of \"tedious\" working cos to them, they \"stopped\" involuntarily after the tediousness before reaching the final answer. If the options happen to have an answer to trick them, they will fall for it. It's not cos they do not know how to do, they just didn't have the mental capacity to think a bit more. This is a test of tenacity.
2) I've posted some tips some time back. Apply whichever applicable to her exams. e.g Transfer error, etc.
3) Redo all the questions again. Flipping the pages is not checking.
4) During checking, if answer differs from the first, do it again. The higher frequency answer worked out will be the confirmed one, usually.
For CL exam:
1) I used to make a list of all the 上上连续音 (both chars with third sound, in which the first char is read as second sound e.g. 蚂蚁and 老虎). She will familiarise herself with these, and not get tricked during exams.
2) Check Open-ended compre first. Same advise as EL exam point (2)
I hope all these help. Most importantly, the child needs to listen and practise them.
Maybe I should have posted all these earlier, but these methods work for my dd, might not be applicable to all. One thing good is this, for us, SAHM, we can identify our kids' weaknesses faster and thus work on them earlier.
