Do we know what is the average score among the Sec1? Is 3.26 consider OK? My nephew who is in RI told me that Sec 1 should be scoring at least 3.6 as the score will drop yearly due to difficulty in the subjects. For RGS, range of marks and their corresponding GPA is as follows:
marks -- GPA
80-100 - 4.0
70-79 - 3.6
65-69 - 3.2
60-64 - 2.8
55-59 - 2.4
50-54 - 2.0
45-49 - 1.6
40-44 - 1.2
0-39 - 0.8
For the Sec 1s and 2s the overall GPA is computed by taking the GPA of the English, Chinese, Maths, Science, and 1 of the Humanities to be the 5 core subjects. Then of the remaining subjects, take the 2 best, plus the 5 core and average it to get your overall GPA. Unless you take 3rd language or something (e.g. MEP, SAP), you should only have 7 subjects for Sec 1s and Sec 2s, that means it is like taking the average of all your subjects.
For Sec 3s and 4s, you will have more subjects, so besides the 5 core subjects (English, Chinese, 1 Maths, 1 Science, 1 Humanities) you can pick the 2 best from 4 remaining subjects (excluding 3rd language, MEP, SAP etc).
Your marks are rounded up. e.g. 69.1 will give you 70.
Your marks (hence, your GPA) for each subject on your report card may be subjected to moderation. Hence, it may be higher than what you calculated, but will not be lower.
As for who takes charge in calculating the GPA, it is the computer...

Hi mummyjoyce, I do not know the avg for Sec 1, but the avg gpa for Sec 4 is about 3.6. If the student is strong in maths and science, it is likely her gpa will go up in upper sec since there will be 3 sciences and 2 maths subjects to count into gpa. Even if she is not, I think she will get used to the sec system and improve her score. My daughter's gpa improves year after year
Don't compare with RI as I heard that they are more lenient with the sec 1s, not sure if true or not. -
In sec 3 and sec 4, maths 1 and maths 2 are 2 separate subjects, they are separate papers.
Social studies is compulsory for all. But the gpa is calculated by 5 core and 2 best. The 5 core subjects are English, Chinese, 1 Maths, 1 science and 1 humanities. Social studies is under humanities. So they will take the best of the 2 maths, the best science, the best humanities. Then from the remaining, they take the best 2.
Rankings are not reflected in year-end report cards. Unless you go and find out on your own, they will only announce the top on speech day. The top person is usually the one with all 4.0, unless no one gets it. If there is a tie, between the ties, the one with the highest overall score gets the top.[/quote]
Hi mjl,
Really appreciate your valuable input! Thank you!
So, you mean to say that a pupil with for eg.overall 90% but GPA 3.94 will be ranked lower than another with an overall of 85% and GPA 4.0? A bit strange ....
By the way, just to kay-poh, do you know roughly how many actually achieve an overall GPA 4.0 at the end of the year? I was told the numbers are very very low (mainly becos of languages)...is this true?
You also mentioned in an earlier post that marks are adjusted upwards eg 69.1 gives you a 70. That was what I thought too, from the scores of the mid-year exams.
However, my dd's form teacher told her that for the final scores, the moderation follows normal mathematical rules eg 69.4 --> 69 (ouch!) & 69.5 --> 70. I found this out only because of some mark discrepancies I had to clarify. Calculated marks higher than school's computation because of rounding down!
The teacher also mentioned that the rounding up of marks from 0.1 was due to a computer glitch in mid-year !?!
Cheers! :celebrate: -

You can go to the parents' portal on iNET and check out the SPM powerpoint slides (left column). There are figures of how this year's Sec 2s performed for their Sec 1 EYAs. Current Sec 1s will probably know the mean GPA only next year during the SPM. Hope this helps.

hi red rose, that is correct, however I do not think it is that strange as I feel the overall % should not be so high and so far apart as you have mentioned.red rose:
It may be true that very few can achieve overall GPA of 4 due to languages, since languages are core that must be included in the GPA calculation. I do not know how many achieve overall 4.0, but usually, only 1 achieve all subjects 4.0, but several can get overall 4.0 since you do not take ALL subjects to compute GPA.By the way, just to kay-poh, do you know roughly how many actually achieve an overall GPA 4.0 at the end of the year? I thought so too, based on the mid-year results. I am unaware of the change of policy or any computer glitch. In the Sec 4 EOY report, only grades are shown, there are no marks. You also mentioned in an earlier post that marks are adjusted upwards eg 69.1 gives you a 70. I can't seems to locate any SPM on the left column? Any idea how to navigate to that? You can go to the parents' portal on iNET and check out the SPM powerpoint slides (left column). There are figures of how this year's Sec 2s performed for their Sec 1 EYAs. Current Sec 1s will probably know the

You have to sign in via the parents' portal. Look on the left side under 'documents' - 2010 SPM is at the bottom of this column, just above 'pictures'.

Parents whose DD got into RGS via DSA. Do you mind sharing your childβs PSLE results?
Thank you very much. -
My Daughter scored 257. COP for RGS is 260. Is it risky to apply?
-
1) Would like to find out if it is diificult or competitive to get into dance as CCA in RGS.
2) Understand RGS has semester system where exams are by semester. Is this correct? Are there weekly tests?
3) Are there any compulsory subjects to take in year 3 & 4? Some schools make it compulsory to take additional maths and combined humanities.
4) Will triple science be offered to all students who are keen or is it offered only to top students whereas all other students need to take only one or two pure science?
Hope to understand more about the above about RGS.
