It seems that she IS friendly to students and has compassion. It is from her conversations with students that she found those in weak classes have inferiority complex. For eg, she said that when she asked the child which class is he/she from, the child did not dare tell her he/she is from \"Patience\". so sad...Pei Hwa is popular and has a WOW factor...tough exam papers and fierce teachers. When I meet parents who have kids in other schools, they tell me how academic driven PH is.
I do wish the principal is friendly and acknowledges the students when they greet her. This reminds me of the principal I had in secondary school who only acknowledges the students who have rich parents. :x -

How about having differentiated questions in a worksheet, instead of differentiating the worksheets. The same worksheet will be assigned to all the banded classes. The high-ability class can attempt all the questions, the middle-ability can also try and do that, as for the weaker ones, they must do the basic questions, yet the rest of the more difficult questions are still opened for them to attempt but not compulsory. Solutions should still be given to these unattempted questions. In this case, they will not feel so 'differentiated' doing only worksheets meant for their ability. They could also be exposed to more challenging questions at the same time.
I think the current worksheets already have something similar. there is a section called \"Challenging Practice\" in MA. Perhaps the weaker ones can skip this section or make it optional. -

Yup, the purpose is mainly to conceal the weakest classes. As everyone said, it will be easy to work out which is the best class.I think the main objective of renaming the classes is not to obscure which class is CH but more to conceal which are the weaker classes. As we all know, steoreotyping has such a powerful effect especially on young children. I can imagine that if a bunch of 8-9 yrs old kids are told they're in the worst class, they will act like the worst class (even if they're capable of better things). Experiements have shown that teachers will modify their teachings based on their perception of the calibre of their classes.
Though initally I've my misgivings over this & the collage thingy, suddenly the motto of the sch popped into my head and I realised that serving God & nation doesn't need excellent academic results. But empathy & kindness is much needed.
To provide our pupils with an all-rounded, bilingual education that will develop them into responsible and forward-looking individuals who will serve God and the nation. -

Hee Hee! Early Bird Catch the \"Best\" Worm-Mah!Hi Funx3, wah....u posted at 3 plus am!! No wonder this thread is going so fast...hehe...
I remember reading somewhere in this thread that besides banding HCL, the school will also band Math. Can you share how it's done at P5 for Math? Will the kids be busy moving classes? Thanks.
Maths Banding Class Works the Same way as HCL, the Best 40 will be in M1, Next lot will be in M2, etc.
And Yes, they do shift the children up / down the banding Class depending on their Results at the end of the year ....
And Yes, if the child's banding class is not conducted in their own class, they have to move to another class for the lessons ....
Plenty of \"LEG\" exercise every day, afterall They bound to have Maths and HCL/CL class Daily .... -

I felt sorry when I read this. This ain't right for the poor kid. Based on this example, I'm sold on the collage idea already.

Forget about my previous reservations about 近朱者赤,近墨者黑. Though I can understand if some parents still feel uncomfortable with the whole collage concept. -

I feel very sorry for the child. There are always pros and cons for choosing one way or the other. For the ease of the teachers and more learning pleasure for the students, banding is good. But I too, think that elitism or inferior complexes are definitely not what I want my kids to have.

As for the principal, when mine was transfered to PH mid last year, she personally spoke to her ex-FT and my girl. She remembered her by name to follow up on her adaptation into the new environment. I was quite touched by her acts. -

HUH Friendly ???? R we talking about the same person????

Not from my personal Encounter with Her and from What I gather from my DD ....
DD found her \"FROSTY\" and \"LONG winded\" - esp during morning assembly, keep droning \"ON and ON\" about the same Topic repeatedly .... Students are Not allowed to Read, Not allow to Doze Off :snooze: (Of Course Not! Told my DD that ) .... \"But Keep Listening to the Same thing Every Morning, Very Difficult to Keep Awake-Lah!\", she Retorted ....
Spoken to my Gal's friends / Classmates in Upper Primary (P4 to P6), She is NOT really a Well-Like Figure among the Gals ....
\"....the child did not dare tell her he/she is from \"Patience\"....\"
R U sure it's not becoz the Kid is Scared of Her? And Not Becoz of Inferiority Complex?
Frankly, I have 2 Older Boys who have \"Graduated\" from PH in early years .... ONE in Patience Class, the Other in Hope Class ....
Have the FULL experience of HOW Academic PH is in their Approach ....
They Really concentrate a Lot of Effort on the Academically \"BRIGHT\" students .... For those Not so Good Academically, U really have to Put in the Effort Yourselves ....
Ever Reprimanded my DS (in Patience Class in those days) on Getting \"BIG RED DUCK EGGS\" for his Chinese Me-Xie, \"Don't Your Teacher scold U for such Bad Results?\"
DS happily Grin and Reply in Mandarin, \" Mei Kuan Xi de, Lao shi bu hui Mah de ....\" (Don't Worry, Teacher never Scold at ALL)
And for the Rest of his Me-Xie in the year, He happily carry Back \"ALL the BIG RED DUCK EGGS\" Home ...... Afterall, Teacher Don't SCOLD What! -

That's what I heard too and have Happily Anticipated New \"Management\" when she was transfered to PH FOUR LONG years ago ....
I remembered her having a very good reputation when she was heading St Hilda before coming to PHPPS.
But Sadly, was disappointed and I much prefer the Previous Principal Ms Chan, who was transfered to MOE ....
If U want to Talk about Friendly, Compassionate, Strict, Discipline, and Caring for the School and Kids .... She's the One that most Parents, Teachers, Students remember for ....
U will Learn More if U try Talking to the Teachers who have been serving both principals ....
In Fact, current principal is very authoritative and Not very Receptive to Suggestions, unless its Hers .... -
Whoa Funx3, really can sense your displeasure at the current prinicpal. You very no-holds-bar hor :!:
Can tell you must be very upset from your ds’ previous experiences in the sch
