i just called up the centre to find out more. its actually learning math through chess. tried to find out more but v difficult to understand over the phone. so they arrange a preview lesson for me and my girl next week. but it sounds interesting though. coz the kids get to learn both math and chess. guess i will go for the preview lesson 1st and share more abt it here next time!

hi qizai, can i check with you if both SCF and IntChess Asia are teaching a pure chess program? i went for the preview lesson at this ho math and chess centre and they are offering an integrated math and chess program. i've seen their workbooks and it looks quite interesting. they use chess symbols and stuff like that to do math puzzle questions. they even showed me the correlation of the program with the moe math syllabus. but am curious if SCF and IntChess Asia are teaching this also? would like to have more options. thanks!

IntChess Asia is teaching a purely chess program. I am not 100% sure about SCF because I don't patronize them but since they're the national chess federation, they should concentrate on purely chess alone too.

While a mixture of chess and maths sound interesting, will the program you mention teach proper chess (as in all the rules, and proper play, development etc)? That's something to think about, I suppose.

Of course it depends on your emphasis. If your emphasis is on Maths, then the program you are thinking about may be the one. But if it's more on chess, I feel a pure chess program is better.

Hope that helps.[/quote]i tink the program probably teaches them the fundamentals only. unlike IntChess Asia. i tink their ultimate goal is to improve math and it happens that chess is a method to achieve that goal. now i'm not so sure what is more impt. to let my girl be trained in chess or to improve her math. schools now are so competitive after all. i din know it'll be so difficult to choose enrichment programs for my girl. there's so many types around! haha. but thanks for your info qizai!

        Hi All,

SCF and IntChessAsia are run by the same boss. They are the same group of people. Another group is PowerChess. These are the 2 Big brothers in the Chess market. If you want to have a good coach, please pm me. Of course, I am not trying to earn any fees, all I want is to try to share my personal experience with all of you. Why? Because Chess is a good mindgame for children to pick up irregardless of age. If you want to know more abt this coach, pm me.

Any views/reviews on Powerchess? Powerchess is nearer my home but their website doesn’t seem to be updated.

            Hi parents

My impression of weiqi and chess, they emphasize strategizing and problem solving, hence 'exercise' the mind

Wondering what's their difference in terms of benefits?

Not sure which to pick - weiqi or chess. Which would you pick and why?

Thanks for sharing your experience 😄

I would suggest chess & it involve plan strategy on different icons like 车马炮,像,将,兵 how can they move in terms of defence & attacking mode.

围棋 more like forming 5 in a row? I'm not expert in 围棋 so cannot comment.

                hey Sleepy,

What about mahjong? You receive the same benefits of weiqi & chess with the added advantage of encouraging of a risk taking spirit :rotflmao:

Ok jokes aside if I can only choose one, I'll go with weiqi cos imo it goes so well with piano, get what I mean?

I just enroll my DD to holiday weiqi class. It will be helpful for her logical thinking.

I would think both are equally good. My children learn both Weiqi and Chess. Somehow, they prefer Chess. The school always send them for competition to sharpen their skills.

I visited powerchess and like the setup of the place. I was informed that the child should have 1 to 1 lessons until he/she is able to play a complete game then can join a group.

I am teaching the basic moves first to minimise the 1-1 lessons needed as group is often more fun for the child.

Another plus point about Powerchess is that it is right next to a nice ice cream parlour http://www.swirlgelateria.com 🙂

                        Very interesting!

While I am a chinese chess player myself, I haven’t found the direct methods to integrate between chess and math.

For those interested, I think you should seriously consider if you want to teach your kid both math AND chess or purely chess alone.

And something to take note, it is not too good to be engrossed in chess. Speaking from experience here.
