I recently bought Knex for my boy, shipped from this website :

      http://www.knex.com/building_toys/400_piece_value_tub.php

It is much more interesting than Lego. My boy can sit for a few hours building a model, and when he completed, he was exhilarated. Then he can take it apart and make many other models. The pieces are very small, so it is excellent for improving his fine motor skills, which will then improve his handwriting skills.

I believe that all kids have a natural curiosity to learn. The problem is that most parents only make them do tons of assessment books, and the fact is that the knowledge in these assessment books are so limited and boring. My boy finds the pictures and facts in the children's encyclopedia so much more interesting, and he is able to incorporate the facts that he has learned into his compositions.

There are many interesting ways to train a child to focus. The money I saved from sending my boy to expensive classes, can be used to buy tons of good toys and books for him, which is helpful him to him any time of the day.

          24hr-mum,

He completed the model by himself, we do not have to sit with him πŸ˜‰ It is meant for 7+, my boy has just turned 6, but he can still figure it out. The pieces are very small, not suitable for very young children.

My shipping charge is SGD40+ because the merchant put it in a big box 😞

                hi all,

My ds has short attention span. His teachers has been telling me that after 5 mins in class, he will switch off. I have found psychologists & behavior therapists to help him. although, ds has short attention span, he can actually sit down & read books (not just picture reading) all by himself. He is able to complete reading 1 book & sometimes he can do up to 2 books in the library!! So sometimes I am really puzzled as to why he has short attention span in school! :? Maybe, the school subjects does not interest him at all?

I remember seeing Knex being sold in Metro a couple of years ago, but now I cannot find them anymore. I guess parents here prefer to spend their money on tons of assessment books and enrichment classes, and are not willing to spend money to buy good toys, so there is no market for such interesting toys here.

The way school subjects are taught, and the way parents drill their kids using tons of assessment books, are certainly very boring and uninteresting to a child. The world of knowledge is actually extremely interesting to kids, and should not be limited to school subjects only.

I wish parents can think twice about bringing their kids to see the psychologists. I heard of a 19 year old student who is very bright, but doing very badly. He told his lecturers that he has a problem, and he needs help from psychologists. He said that his problem is \"laziness\". Laziness is soon going to become an illness. When a child is being brought to see a doctor because he cannot sit still, he is made to think that there is a problem with himself, and that he cannot help it and that he needs help from others. The fact is that most kids can be trained to focus for longer periods of time, but the effort must come from the child himself. What parents can do is to find things that will interest him, and to provide a conducive environment where there are no distractions.
