you know how it is like in exam condition ...... the 命题作文 looks deceptively easy, just a few words as a topic...while the pictures look complicated .....but when the child hit problems developing the plot in 命题作文, it is hard to change topic, time lost, etc etc[/quote]That pic type can also have prob. A kid in dd's class somehow dont know how he looked at the pic and in the end failed the compo paper bec out of topic.
Anyway, none is easy but seems pic type has lesser risk.

Apparently, this time round, his stronger section is compo and oral, maybe this two are closely supervised but not paper two, that is why dip a bit.

DS also starts reading xiao mao ri ji, but not really indept as needs me to read to him.So, I read one chapter to him and he read one chapter to me.No choice cos he is totally anti chinese.Did you make your dd copy down all the chinese vocab being read?
