      I think this is due to lack of preachers volunteering in the school. My boy's class has a few parents volunteers coming in to do CV. As expected, class mgt skills are lacking and there were some unhappy incidents during the CV periods.

      Do take note some CL teachers will make use of these periods meant for Arts, Music for teaching the core subj. Still undecided whether to buy P4 textbooks for Arts, Music.

      My boy's FT was absent ytd, so he did not bring home any memo.

        I don't see any issue with the CL HOD's claim \"marking according to PSLE stds\". If at every level, every teacher marks according to their own liking, imagine the shock the child & parent gets at PSLE. Better learn how to answer properly now than later.


        Sentence construction's criteria is clearly stated by my P3 boy's class teacher that dialogue and question format are strictly prohibited. If her child had written in informal tone and does not get penalised, then sth is really not right.
        It's better to mark exam papers according to PSLE standards. This way, the kids will know where they stand now and 'wake up' if need to, rather than have teachers mark the way they like. It's harsh but honestly I prefer it this way. BTW, PH is swift to conform to PSLE standards.

          It is good to conform to PSLE standards, but do the teachers teach them how to answer in the PSLE standards during lessons. Else it would be a shock to get such marks. There have to be sufficient practices else stds would be demoralise when SA2 papers are returned to them. Some of the stds score well due to external teachers rather than school teachers. Hope that the teachers would be vigilant in this area.

            P3 is a good level to start, esp since there is Science at that level.

            No point getting high scores and be complacent bcos teachers are not stringent...then at P6 get a BIG shock :shock:

            Answering to PSLE standards requires lots of practice and time to get used to. I faced that issue recently with son's SA2 Science paper (Section B). The teacher explained to me that bcos son did not make any comparisons (required of the question), he cannot get the 2 marks for the question. Had he written one word like 'better' or 'more than', he will get the mark.

              Why mark P3 paper by PSLE standard?

              I AM the parent of a Primary 3 pupil in Pei Hwa Presbyterian Primary School and I question the practice of using Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) standard to grade the Primary 3 Higher Chinese examination paper.

              When my daughter came home with her Higher Chinese Paper 2 answer paper on Monday, she was distraught. I found out she did not do well, scoring 39 out of 50. After I went through her paper, I discovered that there were actually three questions which deserved to be marked correct. I queried the school about this and the head of department called to explain that they were marked based on the PSLE scheme of marking.

              My daughter was penalised for writing in an informal tone for her sentence construction question. The other issue was in her comprehension; she got the first part of a two-part question correct, but did not pick the exact portion of the passage to substantiate her answer, and was penalised for it.

              The school’s practice of preparing pupils for the PSLE early is commendable, but it should be a gradual introduction of standards. Such disheartening results in the name of following the PSLE marking scheme is counter-productive.

              As parents, we are already finding it hard to motivate our daughter to take an interest in Chinese. We are language educators and specialists ourselves, yet we are also struggling against the prevailing English-speaking environment to excite her about Chinese.

              I have a colleague whose daughter is in another school. According to my colleague, her dd’s school is also practising marking paper by PSLE standard (her dd is P3 this year). I think it is better to mark exam papers according to PSLE standards. Not only it will be an “across the board” practice for all teachers and more importantly, both the kids and their parents will know where they stand. Eventually, the kids have to sit for psle exam. Frankly speaking, I prefer it to be this way.

                Just curious asking around, did any parents encounter wrong calculation on the marks in report book? Need advice how they take in the marks. :?: (For P1) As i notice there is some calculation error for my kid CH mark.. :scratchhead:

                    I agree with you it's very disheartening to see marks being refused by teachers...hubby found it hard to accept. We thought he could at least get a mark since he chose the correct option, but his teacher said no, bcos it is part of the question...as long as he did not make any comparisons, he is not entitled...then she added, 'PSLE standard'. What can we say ? Nothing.

                      You can check the handbook. It should be 30% SA1, 70% SA2 for P1s. The formula should be pre-set into the system. Unless the teacher keyed in the marks wrongly into the system, if not, shouldn't have miscalculation.

                        For P1, it was 40% SA1 & 60% SA2. This was reflected in the report book.
