Yr first choice must be HCI not RI. Choose yr 2nd choice wisely.

Thank you very much. I was also thinking that RI may not be a safe choice for 258. Your input confirmed it. Thanks again.

Hi tiger262,

If u want ds to go to RI select RI as your 1st choice. Allocation of schools is based on merit. (258s will be allocated b4 257s). Last year's COP, think is 259. My guess is it COP may drop slightly this year.
This is more for average students.

I have a story to share with all parents choosing a secondary school for their children. I have a daughter who was from one of the top SAP schools. She was only an average student there. My daughter was a well behaved and quiet girl. With her average results, she was not given much opportunities to shine. With her aggregate of 207 at the end of P6, I decided to put her in one of the notoriously 'bad' school, where she was top of her cohort. She was put into the best class and was given all kind of opportunities to shine. For 4 years, her teachers willingly stayed back after school whenever she needs extra coaching. At the end of 4 years, she was a leader in her CCA, a peer support leader and an oganiser of many activities, each allowing her to hone her leadership skills. She went into her 1st choice in Poly, Business Engineering, because of her strength in A/E Maths. Her Sec 4 teacher is still her mentor. She's just as popular in the Poly. The head of her Course is given her extra guidance now and then and she's just as active in all the activities. My daughter is now in her 2nd year in Poly and is one of the top 10 students there. I believe she would not have any problems getting accepted into our local U and most importantly, she has become a very confident girl.

My son this year score 226. He's all along had his eyes set on Temasek (COP 230-252). My choice for him is Bedok View (COP 218-229). Thanks to koguma for highlighting the Means and Median, I agree this is also very important. I brought him to Bedok View this morning and I was greeted by 4 students cousillors there, all in their Sec 2. The Principal and Manager were not available to answer to my questions. In fact there was no one in school other than these student cousilors. But, my trip was not wasted. They politely, diplomatically and clearly answered all my questions in good simple English, even the difficult ones I put in to test them. I saw with my own eyes the confidence the School has in them and how well they were trained. Yes, although Bedok View is just an average school, I'm impressed. My son wiill be one of the top cohort there in their best class. I believes like my daughter, he'll be given all opportunities to shine there and being one of the best, his morale will be high and that will motivate him to give off his best. But, if I were to appeal for him to go to Temasek, or put him in one of the better schools with COP 22X, he'll only be at the bottom of his cohort.

With so many of his peers better than him, would he be able to shine?

With my son's personality, I believes Bedok View is a good fit. My son also feels comfortable interacting with these students and is convinced Bedok View is more suitable for him. This school will be my son's 1st choice.

I've scanned thru many comments in this and other threads and I feel it is not how good the school is, but how good will your child be in that school. That's the questions you should be asking. A good school is a school that would give your child lots of opportunity to shine without overwhelming him. Hope all of you will make the right decision where to put your child in.

True. I agreed with you. My niece went to Ngee Ann with an aggregate of 250 last yr. She top in the Sec 1 cohort and she is very happy there. She have told me that if she has gone to any of the top school, she would not shine there.

With 255+2, I am seriously not sure if my son will "shine" in hci if he manages to get in since he will be the bottom of the cohort but if I don’t seize this chance of letting him try out in an ip school, will we regret it in future?

In hci, is the allocation of classes bases on t score so all those who juz made it will go to the bottom classes or each class has a mix of students?

25hourmaid , thank you for your advice ..it really burst ( risky) now ..she does not have HMT. She feels like the sandwich class now ... 😞

Okay, no HMT, so means T-score is 252. But honestly, 252 is a very good score. :celebrate: Suggested schools would be RV, NH, SCGS, St Nics, MGS and even Cedar if distance is not a problem for you. In fact, your girl stands a good chance at Cedar. Crescents Girls is a good consideration too.

You are a wise parent. This principle can also be applied to high achievers ie those who scored 257-264 should seriously consider Dunman High, River Valley High, ACSI, NJC, VS, Cedar, MGS, SCGS, ST.Nicks, Catholic High, SJI too.

Just take a look at PSC, A* honour lists and other scholarship boards and one will know why.

I have been seeing alot of people who have gotten 247 to 249, added with +2 or + 3 HCL to get a score around 248 ~ 252

Last year, my boy score 247 + 2, and tried to appeal to RV, however failed.
if im not wrong for that year ( 2009 ) , the COP was 251. so despite a mere 2 marks below the COP, he was still rejected.

Oh, now i m totally confused. DS's T-score is 235, thot of TKSS as 1st choice, but after reading above, shld i chg to Temasek as 1st choice? :?

Is depends on you and your DS. My son score is 235 (1A* and 3A) as well but I would still want him to go to (tentatively):

1st Choice: Maris Stella
2nd Choice: Chung Cheng High (Main)
3rd Choice: Tanjong Katong Sec Sch
4th Choice: St. Andrew
5th & 6th: Not decided

25hourMaid - Is my choice OK?

Peking and Tsinghua are now considered as elite unis. Grads of these unis are warmly welcome in leading western societies.

I was in Boston last weekend and stayed with friends who are both Harvard professors/Research scientists. The husband commented that he knows that Shanghai Fudan university has a very good science program. Peking, Tsinghua and Fudan are the 3 top universities in China.

With the deteriorating financial condition of US, I suppose many of these scientists have difficulty securing research funding. On the other hand, the chinese government is pumping bigger funding into research. My question is do these scientists you met has considered any possibility of shifting to these universities for their career in the future?

My answer is \"likely\".
Both of my American friends have never been to Asia for work. They participates in scientific conferences mainly in Europe and America but are aware of the scientific communities in Asia. They are unlikely to be able to make the move due to family commitments. However, I have an Asian friend scientist with a National Institute who plans to leave the institute and do work in China in the near future. She laments the fact that she should have done more Mandarin even though she is fluent in the language as it would make dealings in China easier.

In the last week of meeting a number of people, it does seem that things have not recovered here in the US. Jobs are still not coming around.

I'm sorry this is :offtopic: so i better end here..
