Hi,Hi Innovate,
My son got 258. You had advised that RI is risky as first choice. But 'Dharma' suggested (in an earlier post) that I can choose RI as my first choice.
The general view appears to be - The CoP for RI was 259 last year and it is likely to fall by at least 1 or 2 marks this year since overall T-scores have fallen across all schools in 2010.
My son is keen on RI. His teacher is telling that RI CoP this year most likely will be 257. In these circumstances, I feel that it is better to put RI as my first choice. Can you please comment?
I think the issue of CoP likely to be lower this year merits due weightage in choosing schools. For 258, RI seems to be well within range this year. I seek the advice of all of you.
Thanks a lot.
Just my opinion. RI is a great school with a great alumni, history, principal, strong sense of identity among students and great students. However, it took me so long to confirrm that these great/very bright students are receiving a lot of outside help in their academics by tuition centres, top of the range private tutors or very learned parents. Good for the teachers....majority of the students came equiped with knowledge, learnt ahead from out of school. -

Below 250 = 249?[/quote]248
My son scored 252 +3,he has been offered all the 3 categories of third language choices as well as HMTL. His friends who scored below 250 have been offered categories 1 and 2 third language choices.mum-in-action:

Can someone tell me what is the COP for 3rd Lang (top 10%). This COP is usually around 250. Last year was 248. With this info, we can estimate whther there is an increase/ decrease of the numbers of student scored between 250 and 259.
We already knew 260 is the top 3% (EESIS awards). Therefore the nos. of ppl scored 260 and above is 45000 x 3% = 1350 -
my dotter 251. dun have 3rd lang leh?

Hi Jacz,
Guess you have already done your homework when you identified the schools that have COP near to your boy’s score.
Your concerns about the attitudes of teachers and students while valid may not be so crucial. This is because:
1. The quality of teachers for schools are evenly spread out in Singapore since most (if not all) of them graduated from NIE.
2. Based on the COP, you probably can have a rough gauge about students’ attitudes based on their acad performance. I would say 230 is a pretty good score and students who have achieved such a score would probably range from average to above average.
Perhaps the more important question is whether your boy likes the school for example the school culture, people and infrastructure. Also some of these schools have certain niche areas and if your boy happened to have interests in those areas, it would benefit him greatly.
A good way to tell if the school is good match for your boy is to visit the schools when they have their Open House. If that is not possible, at least drive around the neighbourhood during a weekday and observe the students and their activities.
Another thing to note is the distance of the school from your home. Secondary school activities can be hectic so if an hour saved on travelling is an extra hour of rest for your boy.
Hope this helps. -
Hi all
Interesting forum with lots of useful info and advice - great for parents like me who went thru PSLE first time with kid!
My DD scored 234 + 2 HCL. Within the vicinity of north east, my selection for her is as follows:
Choice 1 : Nan Chiau
Choice 2 : Zhong Hua
Choice 3 : Presbyterian High
Choice 4 : Chung Cheng Yishun
Choice 5 : CHIJ St Joseph
Choice 6 : Mayflower
Would appreciate advice:
1. Between Nan Chiau and Zhong Hua, which is better as a first choice? I feel that NC has a brighter prospect given that it is going to be a SAP school soon and the O level results is better. But ZH has a higher COP of 236 compared to NC of 231 so would the cohort be stronger academically?
2. By placing ZH as 2nd choice despite the higher point, would it be wasting a critical choice?
3. How important is the secondary sch affiliation to JC? PH, CCY and CHIJ St Joseph are all affiliated to a JC. Should I give up ZH totally and \"upgrade\" PH or CCY to 2nd choice?
Thanks in advance!

DS has a few friends who are appealing to go RI even though they have secured a place at other IP sch via DSA. Their t-score is 260+.
I feel there might be more boys out there with other DSA offer now appealing to go RI.
I wonder how does this affect the available vacancies for S1 posting?
If these boys are successful in their appeal & transfer to RI, would the number of vacancies at RI be reduced for S1 posting? If so, does this mean that those with t-score that just meet COP or 2 points below COP might be at risk if they plan to put RI as their 1st choice for S1 posting? -

Good choices
Presbyterian High (229, 232)
Mayflower Sec (222, 222)
Chung Cheng High Yishun (230, 230)
The staff culture DOES make a huge difference in terms of the 'quality' of teachers.
Tired teachers who are 'sick and tired' of the management won't be very happy with their job, which means they won't be very happy when dealing with the students.
Look out also for staff welfare & how the teachers carry themselves.
If possible, search for blogs of students from these schools and read about what praises or grouses they have about their teachers. -
Er, is it feasible if we gather statistics for the top 1350 by compiling scores? (Top 3%)
Exact names of students are not required, but can be filled in if they are available. It’s like, how many pupil scoring a score.
