What do you think of following choices for 230 :

1.) Tanjong Katong Secondary school (COP 234)
2.) Nan Chiau (COP 231)
3.) Temasek Sec Sch (COP 230)
4.) ?
5.)??
6.)???

Thank in advance.

The COP as a rule does not change very much if the situation of a given school is stable. It is ruled by โ€˜market forcesโ€™, with adjustments for โ€˜market failuresโ€™ such as DSA.

The reason that the COP does not change very much is that the overall distribution of the PSLE grades does not vary much because of the large candidature. After raw scores are converted to t-scores, most schools will see at most a COP adjustment of 1-2 points.

Now, suppose there is really a significant increase in the number of people in the range 250-260 and also for scores >260 (for example). The question would be, how come? The main reason would have to be that the distribution shifted up as a whole while the spread remained about the same.

That means, if a candidate got a 230, that candidate must be actually be significantly worse compared to this cohort than another candidate with 230 in a previous year. There are more people with better scores.

So why doesnโ€™t the COP change much?

Because the market is essentially random after the top few schools and the DSA are taken into account. By the time you reach your second, and certainly your third choice, it is a lottery. That is why you should aim to hit a school on your first choice.

People being mostly rational, that is what they do. They read the COPs from the MOE website (or from KSP) and they go for a 1st choice school that is not more than +1 or +2 compared to the PSLE aggregate, or lower.

Remember that the COP is the LOWEST score of a student getting into a given school. When you look at the range entering a school, that doesnโ€™t help either; the top scorer may be there for many reasons โ€” one of which is something like: had 260, applied for RI first choice and didnโ€™t make it, wound up with third choice.

Just some thoughtsโ€ฆ

why go up since the overall top marks is lower than previous years?

Even though Topmark dropped from 290 to 282 , I heard the percentage of students getting more than 250 is much higher than in 2009. This will cause the COP to go up. Don't forget the Topmark of 290 or 282 is the score of only one student , the Top student. :?: :?: :?: :?:

ok , but if only one gets 282 , and the rest are 270's 260's and 250's , compared to last yr many 280's are gone , then as such COP may drop for some schools right ?
I understand your statistical logic here. I do not know the distribution of score between 282 and 290 back in 2009. Not sure how many and what was the score distribution after 290 back in 2009. I just spoke to many parents and observed many scored more than 250 this year. With all due respect , even those who historically did less than 250 in school exam did very well at PSLE this year

So far, the information available are:

260 for top 3%
252 currently the lowest for top 10%. Any lower please update.

Someone posted 250 for top 10% somewhere in the forums.

Friend's dd got 249 +2. offered French/German/Jap.... top 10%?
Anyone has found a T-score lower than 249 that offers German/Jap/French?

I read in the forum last year COP for 10% i.e. offered German/Jap/French is 248.

2 reasons why I think you have not found your answer so far :

1) this thread's been moving super fast and some posts got \"lost\" along the way,

2) you have not been clear enough about where you stay and whether your child is a girl or a boy, and if you are willing to try for schools outside the East area, so very difficult for people to help even if they wanted to.

That said, I think Augmum has given you some very good suggestions, so I suppose you have something to work on now? :?
