Hi all. I would like to seek the wisdom and experience of all xstudents/parents of DHS. I was very impressed by the mission/depth/facilities of the high school. The only issue i have is that my ward comes from a English school and English is the language she is most comfortable in , tho she scored A for her psle chinese and is eligible for HMTL. Will she be able to fit into the dominant chinese culture in DHS? Do all the kids in DHS speak in chinese only and will the english speaking students be slighted by teaches and the general student body? Pls advise. Thanks a lot

Hi, I have a neice in DHS Year 3 and she speaks English all the time. Although DHS may have a strong chinese culture with unexaminable lessons like ACC (Appreciation of Chinese Culture) that Year 2 students take or GAP for Year 1 students where my neice got to learn chinese painting, the students there are all mainly english speaking. There are many that are fluent in both languages as there is a strong emphasis on both and not simply on Chinese. The english speaking students will definitely not be slighted by teachers and since many subjects are taught in english, it is a good skill to have a good grasp of the language. However, it is strongly advised to speak chinese during chinese lessons and Moral Education classes. πŸ™‚ The chinese teachers even know some english to help some of the students better understand the meaning of the chinese idiom or phrase. Oh, the chinese teachers are also very patient and kind so it'll be a good time to brush up on chinese in DHS! My neice has been enjoying herself in DHS even though she has been speaking english as her dominant language since young. Good luck! πŸ™‚

You hve certaintly given an accurate account of what’s happening in DHS. Yes, many converse with each other in english.

Those days when english speaking families sent their kids mainly to convent/mission schs are long gone. An increasing numbers are sending their kids to SAP schs. Also the standard of chinese in many english centered schools has improved significantly over recent years.

The divide btw chinese and english centered schools is no longer an issue and should remain so.
