i think 254 can go into cedar safely even if COP goes up. don't worry unnecessarily.
Thanks for your reply. My daughter is interested to pick up a 3rd language (she is offered to take up) but she is still not sure at this moment whether she should pick up Japanese or French as the third language. Which is more useful, easy to master and selected by most students as 3rd language? Any advice?headache_queen123:

Xinmin seems to be a v gd sch. It has participated in many competitions, some on tv. Even though they did'nt win, they did well. I have a gd impression of this sch. If your child is v keen on taking 3rd lang and has no problem with other subjects, can always give a try. If really cannot cope, can still drop after 1 yr.
She scored 254 and has decided to put Cedar Girls' as her first chocie. However she is worried that she may not get in as its COP may go up drastically this year due to its new upgraded building and IP coming up. Hence her 2nd choice becomes very important.
She is not sure whether to put Anglican High or Xinmin as her 2nd choice. It appears to me they are quite similar in terms of academic performance but Xinmin (in Hougang) is further away from our home(Tampines) than AHS (near Bedok) and Xinmin appears to be extremely strict with its students (we went to its open house). However AHS is a SAP/Christian school and my daughter is better in English language than Chinese and she prefers a mixed cultural environment.
With all these conflicting factors to consider, we are not sure what to put as 2nd choice even at this moment. She is also thinking of putting Tanjong Katong Sec School as her 2nd choice (COP = 234 last year). Is this wise? Any advice you could give? Thanks!
The real IP starts in 2012.
But for the sec 1 in 2011, who will be in sec 3 in 2013, 50 girls will be selected for the IP prog too, that's why sch is expecting COP to increase but 254 is still way above the COP, shouldn't be a prob

Cos out of about 400 students, only 50 will be affected. And i guess is the top 50 after Sec 2 exams. So no guarantee u can make it to top 50.

Hi vynx25hourmaid:
hi 25hrmaid
after much much consideration, i have decided to put my son with the following choices:
1st: Maris Stella
2nd: St. Andrew
3rd: Tanjong Katong Sec
4th: Nan Chiau
5th: Zhonghua
6th: Xinmin
my wife wanted (and wanted) to put SJI as 1st choice. what's your opinion and anyone can give me some comments as i still can amend one time before 3pm today.
our initial plan was to put Chung Cheng (Main) as 1st choice. however, after considering his CL2 standard, we decided to take it off.please help? still worry about our choices made. thanks in advance
Sorry, I have read so many posts, answered so many questions, and PMs the last few days that I have absolutely have no idea what was the score your son got for the PSLE, but if my memory does not fail me, I think you son's marks is a bit off from SJI's COP right?
My take is that 2 points from a dream's schools COP is worth a try, but anything more than that, I would classify as \"can try, but risky\".
Hope that helps.
thanks .. my son aggregate is 235 .. i have told my wife his T-score is too far fetch to opt for SJI (looking at the past years COP of SJI)
any comments on my choices made as mentioned above? thanks
Your choices sound rather logical if not for the sentence highlighted in red.
Maris Stella is also a SAP school and Nan Chiau will join the SAP school status soon. So if you say your son's Chinese is \"not that good\", it sounds rather illgical to me that you took out CCHM from your choices, but yet listed another SAP school as your first choice, unless of course, your son really likes Maris Stella a lot and if so, then he stands a very good chance in getting into Maris Stella since his score is 3 points above MS' COP.
That said, I am also a bit puzzled by your 6th choice. Yes, quite unlikely for your son not to be accepted by MS, but then again, why is a school with a COP of 240, which is 5 points higher than your son's score listed as the 6th choice? :? Would suggest that you rethink that, kind of wasting your last choice. Think of it this way, if your son is unable to get into the other 5 schools listed above XM, what are his chances of getting into XM with a COP that is higher than his score?
Hope you don't mind, just my thoughts. -

Thanks again for your quick reply. How about the 3rd language question. Could you help? Thanks.
Japanese will be easier to learn than French, imho. Cos rather similar to chinese in some way. But Jap is also the most popular of the 3 languages. It boils down to interest. Don't take just because you are offered. Take because you really love that language. you can read of the high drop out rate for 3rd lang after the first year in this forum.

And i can tell you it's so hectic in Cedar. My DD did not get Jap (cos no vacancies anymore) and on hindsight, she said it was a blessing in disguise. -

Xinmin has a v challenging prog ,HCL is also offered, I don't know about Anglican high, but time spent travelling to sch is also an important factor (for me) If the time spent to sch for these 2 sch is not so much of a difference, I think Xinmin may be a better 2nd choice. (just my opinion)
Glad to offer any suggestions.

Glad to offer any suggestions. :D
Between Japanese n French, Japanese seems to be easier to master n also more popular. Don't really need to use French unless she works in a French company or has a French boyfriend
A lot of Japanese companies around, may help her to get a job next time. A more marketable language.
Of course, your girl's interest which language must be considered. -

Yes, I would like to know about this too..
How the MOE computer rank and select those who are affiliated?livewith_vanilla:
Okay lets say last year I scored 259 for my PSLE.
I placed Cedar Girls as my first choice. As MOE ranks each and every pupil who took the PSLE paper, when it is my turn, the computer would first look at my first choice, in this case Cedar Girls.
As Cedar Girls still has vacancies when it is my turn, I am admitted to Cedar Girls.
However, if I placed my choices like this:
1. School A (COP 262)
2. School B (COP 263)
3. School C (COP 262)
4. School D (COP 261)
5. School E (COP 263)
6. Cedar Girls
I placed Cedar Girls as my sixth choice.
So the MOE system would do it like this.
They rank each and every one who took the PSLE paper.
When it is my turn, the computer would see if there is any vacancy in my 1st choice, School A. If there isn't, the computer would move on to my 2nd choice, School B. Then to school C, school D and to School E.
Lets say there are no vacancy in any of my first five choices.
Then finally the computer would go on to my final choice, Cedar Girls.
There are vacancies in Cedar Girls, thus I am able to get into Cedar Girls.
Hope You understand my explanation ! -
Just wonder if it is better to include a 2nd or 3rd option for 3rd language in case you donβt get your 1st one?

This is good news to me - our preference is tt dd doesn't do 3rd language - just concentrate on HCL. However, she insists on doing 3rd language - put Jap as 1st choice, Malay SP as 2nd choice. We strongly recommended Malay to her as 1st choice but she still insists on Jap. We've decided tt she'll have the final say and see how it goes. This mummy is rather mean
Japanese will be easier to learn than French, imho. Cos rather similar to chinese in some way. But Jap is also the most popular of the 3 languages. It boils down to interest. Don't take just because you are offered. Take because you really love that language. you can read of the high drop out rate for 3rd lang after the first year in this forum.

to rejoice at the prospect of no vacancy!

Hope you don't mind, just my thoughts.
yup, i understand Maris Stella is a SAP school. however, looking through the CCA of Chung Cheng (Main), there's alot of activities that are Chinese related. Maris Stella offer something different.
my son score A for his CL2 (to me it is a miracle as he always fail his CL2 Paper 2). my son has to buck up his Chinese and he has promised he will try (he has done that for his PSLE)
my son's form teacher just called to remind to submit the Application. i have told her the choices and same question as you have mentioned - Maris Stella is a SAP school. same thing i have told her and she think if my son do not \"switch off\" - not paying attention, he should be fine.
as for the last choice, i don't know what to put after going through the list many times and decided on Xinmin. any suggestion?
