All About Choosing and Buying Pianos

Hi Vicki, currently my DD having private lesson at home. Her weekends are alerady packed with other enrichment classes, don’t have time and car to chaufer her on weekdays. But i am not sure if its a good idea to get a private teacher. As i am music illiterate, do not know whteher the teacher is good or not.

:idea: How about:
1) Record the lesson and/or her practice sessions.
2) Upload it.
3) Ask for commends.
4) Repeat 1-3 weekly.

I guess it really depends if DD is a beginner, intermediate or advanced.
Firstly, just check your music teacher's qualification. If you DD is just a beginner, then as long as the teacher is grade 8, she should surely surely know the rudiments of music, hand positioning on the keyboard, teaching finger drills and scales etc... In otherwords, just check the certificate. However, if your DD is intermediate, then pls go for higher qualification.

The rest boils down to human touch ability to communicate with the child and encourage the child, which does not take a music literate person to observe. Take some time off work and simply observe the lesson.

Sorry, don’t agree with Sci on the "If you DD is just a beginner, then as long as the teacher is grade 8, she should surely surely know the rudiments of music, hand positioning on the keyboard, teaching finger drills and scales etc…" There are, of course, those who can teach and are good at teaching beginners at this stage, just as there are those who CAN’T teach properly even with a diploma cert or any cert! I believe that a good foundation must be built at the early stages so finding a good, competent teacher at this stage is crucial, otherwise as more and more gets piled on, if the foundation is not built properly, the whole thing will crumble.

Hi Everyone,


I am planning to get a upright piano for my 7 yrs old. I came across this particular model Kawai CE 7 which cost $1,000. Last heard from the shop owner that this model is make in Japan. Age wise is about 10 over years.
Is this deal consider a good one as I only nuts about piano. Can any kind soul out there help me please, thank you.

Hi sook - actually my cousin (who stays quite near me) teaches piano from Grade 1 to 4. But i didnt put my kid with her cos i tot it would be more enjoyable for my son (at age of 4 then) to have group lessons....

The thing about Yamah Junior Course is that the parent must seat in with the kid! So, i made my hb seat in (since he is music illiterate (whereas i learnt the organ before) - 'free' music lesson for him!)

It is a mad rush for us every friday nite (sat is jam packed with enrichment for all 3 kids and sun is a rest day for us)! Hb rush home from work - pick up kid - and attend class with him!

But so far so good!! Now at least after changing to piano class - we dont have to seat in anymore - so after dropping ds off - he will go for kopi (whilst waiting for me to come to Plaza Sing)!

Hmm.... btw - the tot of repeating the whole process for ds2 and ds3 is abit scary - will see how it goes!!!

I have a feeling the piano might be A LOT older than 10 yrs…If I’m not wrong Kawai stopped producing CE7 quite a number of years ago. You can call Kawai (Robert Piano is dealing with Kawai) to check. Anyway CE7 is a low end model. For starters it’s fine but you will need to change somewhere along the road.

Thank for your advise. I had already confirmed with one of the shop that CE 7 should be hitting at least 20 years or maybe more.

Hence I managed also to get another kawai model CX 5 which is about 20 years, newer model than CE 7. Reason why I am considering this set is because the shop owner aloow me to trade in my old set at full price if it is within a year.

My thinking is that if my son is willing to go for the whole year, I still can decide whether I want to invest in a better piano for him for the future. I am in the midst of sorting out my option. Hopefully, I can get an answer by the end of the week.

Now I began to know why there are so many posts in here from parents. Too many pointers to consider when one got little cash to spend or other things to consider. But for the kids, its definitely worth

Wanna check with you how do we check about the age of Kawai piano?
I know that we can check the manufacturing year from the serial #. Where to check?

Today I went to visit Singapore Piano Shop at Bt Merah and she is selling the 2nd hand Kawai Piano at a lower price compare than others.

Are all Kawai pianos made by Japan?
