VJC is much more than an above average school. Over many years, they have been producing many promising students, many are expected to occupy leadership positions in the future. Of course a drastic 3% drop in their quality performances last year is a concern.
Like you said, your kid will end up in a local uni just like the vast majority of students from RI and HCI.

I concur with your view. However, I noted an advantage of getting to RJ. Somehow, most kids will get the A's - as it is some kind of a culture (expectation). It is not true that they worked very hard to get it. They are very havoc and playful bunch. Kids in other JCs who do well usually worked very hard (don't know why).happymum8:

Just a side note, why do we still compared so much (in statistic).
I would rather my kid to be in a above average school, enjoy the school life with lots of laughter and obtain a resonable 'A' level result which can see the kids to uni.
Be it RJC, HCJC, VJC.... all will meet up again in the work force and the winner but not be those from the top JCs.
We know that the current society are looking at cheerful personality who can achieve high level of standard.
At the end, it is being happy that is the most important. Maybe that is why I subconsciously prefer RJ because they are having fun and yet can get the A's.
I find it hard to believe that just by getting into RJ and immersing in the culture will somehow, by some enigmatic process, allow the student to get A easily without having to work hard.
Could the reason be just that students getting into RJ are the smartest? That is the only reason that I believe in...smart people do not have to study very hard to get As (but nowday As in O and A level are getting easier and easier to obatin). -

The year of the start of dropping in percentage of the quality past coincide with the beginning of IP program in some schools that traditionally provide good students for VJC. In fact, that is not a surprising outcome for me as it is expected. And I fully understand why the pricipal of VJC was pushing very hard to go IP with sec 1 intake. Because that is the only way for it to retain some its best students. The same reasoning goes to NJC. I am sure its absolute standard, compare to itself will drop, if it does not implement the IP program right from sec1.happymum8
On the surface, VJC's performance looks good, but we are talking about one of our best jcs so on closer analysis, its not a pretty picture.
The jc had achieved a passing rate of 97.8% for students with at least 2H2+2H1+GP/KI. They had already attained such passing rate way back in 2000. Now, here we are disscussing the performance of a very good jc, therefore, the better yardstick we can use is quality passes ie 3H2-4H2 distinctions. The analysis are summarised as follows:
2007 3 and 4H2 distinctions: 54.5%
2008 3 and 4H2 distinctions: 53.5%
2009 3 and 4H2 distinctions: 50.5%
You will observe the perforcentage of distinctions is dropping. -

Ya, I have also mentioned earlier that HCI & RJ got the best of the cohort so it is not surprising that their results are better than other JCs.
However, when I mentioned that \"they\" will get the A's, the \"they\" that I was referring to were not those students who got into RJ through academic excellence. I was referring to those who got in by DSA because of sports excellence.
Over the years, I have come across many of these sports DSA students struggling to keep up with the others while they were in RI or RGS. There were cases who dropped out along the way but very few. Most of them pull through the 6 years. The best is that most of them get at 2As and above. It is this group of sportsman and sportswomen that make me believe that by being in the mist of people with the mindset that \"getting straight A's is no problem\", we will get more A's than under normal situation. However, could it be that these top athletes did not do well earlier because they had spent too much time training. My answer is no. I am not referring to the national medal winners. These were not the top national athlete. In fact most of them took up sports because their parents wanted them to DSA into RI/RJ through sports. Once inside, they train leisurely because it is a requirement for them to continue with the sport.
Just my observations over the years. -

Heard from my friend.that COP for NUS High this year is 264 and last year COP only 257.
Go up by 7 points. Unexpected.
Think COP for top schools all go up this year. -

In the NUSH thread, I have said that only 10% places (17 places) are available for PSLE posting this year, and I know from my girl pri school, many of the her friends (DSAed student) are hot about NUSH this year.Heard from my friend.that COP for NUS High this year is 264 and last year COP only 257.
