All About Getting Help for Students Weak in Math

For P2, there is this step by step maths problem solving using models by Simon Eio which I find not bad. If the child is cannot grasp the concept of model drawing to solve problem, this book really has alot of excercises for the child to try. I don't know whether there is book for P3 or upper level. You can get them at Popular or The Big Bookshop.comfy:
For Math, perhaps you can get the step-by step problem solving math assessment book for her to do and her father to coach her. Then you will know where is her problem and which types of questions and drill her on it.
Hi comfy, could you kindly recommand some step-by-step problem solving math assessment books for me? Where I can get those books...Thanks. -

hquek,
When reading a paragraph or question, teach your girl to highlight the important parts - then when she is attempting the answer, the highlighted parts may come in useful.
OT, but does this apply to CL too? my boy's finds it difficult to understand CL compre passages and what the questions are asking. :stupid: -
Hi all,
Just wanna seek some advice.
What about for pri five child, concept everything is ok, but when comes to doing math, when the questions wanted mango to orange, and the child will give the answer, orange to mango.
20 50 cent coins, 10 20 cent coin, will see reverse, become 10 50 cents along the working.what is wrong with this kid?thanks

my next-year p3 girl seems to hv the same prob too.
gd in basic math, vocab, but poor in prob sum n compre.
copy number also copy wrongly
i hv been getting her to underline key words for math n eng. it helps, but she stimes still dont hv the habit of findg key words
tazyspin, is ur child from elite sch? maybe that sch std too hi?
i find the prob wf my girl is lack of analytical n logical thinkg skills but this is due to immaturity. i really dont know how to help except tuition, n practise n practise ahead n get her underline key words
maybe try do more topical assessment bks or problem sum assessment bks rather than CA/SA/exam papers which contain everythg but u dont know whc area is the weaknesses -

Could be not able to visualise what he read ? Ask him to draw out the 20 50 cent coins, 10 20 cent coin and see whether he is correct. Then you will have a better understanding what he is seeing or if draw correct, perhaps need to be more careful.Hi all,

Doing problem question, ask her question and ask her to explain what it means. If don't understand, explain as simply to her by drawing or use real life example to explain. For copying problem, I ask my dd to say loudly when doing the copying at home. If in sch, read softly to herself. When she can overcome this problem, then can stop this practice. ( I read somewhere that it say that sometimes the eyes read to fast and the brain has yet to process , hence might cause this problem). The alternative is to check after writing the no., might be tedious for kid to do that.my next-year p3 girl seems to hv the same prob too.

hi 24hr-mum,
Nice meeting here again...same scenario for my boy going p3 next year. The tutor said his foundation is ok but dunno why he got transfer problem + careless too. Sometimes calculated the answer correct, but write down in statement can be wrong...
Sometimes, lengthy problem solving he also anyhow 'ham tang' and do...i am most worried for his maths but he not worry at all! Haiz....24hr-mum:

ya, if the question involved eg $ and quantity, she can mix up the values for both. just not a clear-minded person by nature.
she is that kind, open door, forgot to close the door type of person. -

Hi kelpw!
I wanted to ask as ur same qn.My son is the king of careless mistakes. This SA2 paper haven’t yet come.So I don’t know where he lose marks. He has no problem with undertanding model. But he hate to do lot of practise. He does very slow.He will be in P4 next year.Still he haven’t yet memorise the multiplication table. He use skip counting. His CA1 and SA1 dipped in P2 then CA2 and SA2 improved a lot with no careless mistakes. Then again P3 CA1,CA2 and SA1 continuously go down. Now SA2 improved by 10 marks than CA2.So I decided to send tution. Then I analyse all tuitions. Now finally I decide to coach him by my self.I read a lot of threads in KSP and took some valuabe advise. No Teacher better than the own parent.
