Btw Winth, have u tried panadol? Cuz the painkillers gp prescribed nvr work for me, I tried panadol on my sis advice and the pain relief is almost instant if u pop it before it starts cramping real bad...

Hi, have tried panadol, sometimes popped into 2-3 at one go. But was eventually advised by doctors not to go for panadols as the addiction will increase. Anyway, panadols didn't really work.

The docs gave me (pronounced as pon-s-tan) forgot the actual spelling, but the addiction went up to 2 capsule per cramp as well. The heat pack helped alot, but only restriction is that you got to stay at home, but it sure helped me during the nights.

Was very lucky that cramps weren't that serious after I gave birth.

Was it a blue & white capsule? Then it could be ponstan. I used to take that for tension headaches cos panadol does nothing for me. Can’t anymore though, cos not safe for breastfeeding…

Yes, ponstan is the one I took too. It worked wonders and I limited my intake so as to cut down reliance on it.

That's why lor... after taking too much for too long, it will not work anymore. Plus the doc said might affect my hormones. So stopped since JC times, just got to endure when I had the cramps - every first day of the period.

Yes, it's always best to rely on natural remedies instead of drugs.

If all else fails, try to distract yourself from the pain, eg read a good book, listen to music & relax over a nice cup of chamomile *bliss* , cook/bake, start a project (I recently made pillows for all 3 of my kids), chat on KSP forum ....

                😉

                    schellen:

I think if you have very bad cramps and backache due to period, even Panadol Menstrual doesn't do anything to alleviate the pain. Eventually, my gynae gave me a prescribed medicine that comes in a capsule form. It not only helps with the backaches and cramps, it lessens the flow too. It was a blessing to me since I suffered from the pain and very heavy flow. I took about 1 a day for the first 2 days of my period when I get the pain and heavy flow. The only disadvantage is that you can't get it over the counter at pharmacies and it costs more than Panadol (can't remember how much as it was ages ago when I took it). I can't remember the name of the medicine but I'm sure if you mention it to a doctor experienced with this, he/she will know what you're talking about.
Hi Schellen, so the capsule u refering here is ponstan rt??? 😄

I thought ponstan is really meant for migraines?

Postan (Mefenamic acid BP) is a painkiller that is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent (NSAID). It works for most pains thats acute or throbbing. It is an effective drug, but of course with any types of painkillers, you can get used to it and need higher doses for relieve when taken long term. Ibuprofen is another effective painkiller too, can buy over the counter in pharmacy (brand name is Neurofen). I take it for my backaches and tension headaches. For my migraines, the only effective relieve is Synflex (Naproxen), which is thru prescrition only.

The reason I know about painkillers, its bcos I hv very bad backaches, migraines and sport injuries b4. I got educated about proper usage of painkillers, so that i wouldn't get addicted to them.

About menstral cramps, I m one of those lucky ones that escape the agony of it. When i started having my period at age 12, my mum prepared some kind of herbs for me and also I had some kind of pill too. It was supposed to strengthen my womb and avoid cramps.

Strange enough, after I had DS, I started to hv more discomforts like water retention/bloatedness/headaches/heavier flows during my period. 😛
