... Son's school just switched to 'My Pals' this year from Shaping Maths. A friend advised me to get the 'accompanying' Math assessment book for Shaping Maths...who would have expected school to switch publisher. 😢

Yes, I saw your FS post last night. Can understand your predicament. Rather than clearing the books at a loss, why not just convince him to work through the Shaping Maths assessment books? I have friends who made their P5 son work through P5 assessment books during the Nov-Dec holidays in prep for P6.

...those of you who have used these books, is the \"http://www.onsponge.com/images/stories/keystrategies/articlesamplefull.jpg\" taught in this book accepted as the right way to solve problems? Or do teachers insist on the \"Model Method\"?

Yes. The branching method is acceptable. The child can choose either method.

Thanks, Brenda. That is good to know. I felt that the Branch Method is more easy to understand (and more logical to follow).

I will use the Shaping Math assessment books as revision for P5 CA1.
Then for P6 next year, I will get accompanying Math assessment for 'My Pals'. I strongly believe in daily revision even though it's the hols. 1 hour every morning.

            Hi,

Can I find out more about this ‘branch’ method? What is it and how is it different from the model method?

I am not used to the branch method, the model method is more intutive for me.

Regarding branch method: not all school teachers teach the branch method, right ? if not taught in school but used by child, will it be ok ? I know PSLE will accept but just wondering…

A school near me uses onsponge workbooks and the teachers teach branch method hence I’ve heard a fair bit from friends and neighbours.

I have heard of friends with P6 kids who use this method but their teacher who did not understand this method rejected it but after the parent explained to the teacher and showed the onsponge book, she accepted it.

My question is what is that teacher is a psle marker and does not know this method, would they accept it?

This book was published in year 2006 and it will be very interesting if the PSLE maths markers not aware of ths branching methods. Noted there was a page printed with:

We would like to express our heartful appreciation to ................... Ministry of Education) who is the consultant to this book.

I too am more comfortable with the model method. But my DS likes branch method. When he was doing it in the On-sponge book I asked him whether it is a new method he learnt from the book. But he said that his teacher already had taught the branch method in P5.

Whether the teacher will accept will depend on the teacher I think.
Last year we ( my DS and me) learnt the assumption method which can be used for probelms where tabulation is called for. And for his CA2 exam he used it to solve a question correctly and got full marks for it, even though the method was not taught by his teacher.
