That means employing an ex singapore indonesian maid will cost about $1500 per month if you take into account the levy, food, lodging and expenses.

I wonder will any singaporean will be willing to come to the house mon to fri during office hours and baby sit and do some housework for a slightly higher pay?
Maybe it is time to consider local help instead.
Childcare? Although means housework takes a backseat, but at least you are assured no one is going over the parapet.

Anyway, with this additional change, I was initially mulling about having a number 3. Now I can happily say for sure, 2 is enough for me. My kids are at independent stage and I'm glad to stay that way.

        Hello..

Ha...Ridiculous email from an agency which i just received.

According to MOM, from today onwards, all nationality maids salary will be $450 with one off day, $480 with no off day..

As for ex Singapore, $500 with one off day, $550 with no off day..

Agency fees will be increased too!

        Getting a maid now is........MAD!!
Email back ask them, sure is MOM ruling or not? Ask them to show you letter from MOM. From news paper, it wrote 17 agency is increasing their maid pay to $450. Not MOM.

I called my agency, they are not increasing it yet. So those agency who are increasing to $450, I wouldn't go to them. šŸ˜›

        See below report from CNA:-

        http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1105453/1/.html

SINGAPORE : The salaries of new Indonesian foreign domestic workers will soon rise.

17 major employment agencies in Singapore will increase the monthly salaries for the workers from S$380 to S$450. The increment will take effect by this week, they said.

Over the years, the supply of Indonesian maids in Singapore has been dwindling.

Employment agencies indicated that the shortage was due largely to demand from places such as Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The agencies recently met maid suppliers from Indonesia to try and resolve the issue. One solution is to provide better salaries.

Desmond Chin, group director, Nation Employment, said: \"All the suppliers, they're facing difficult conditions to recruit. They are requesting us to match the maid's salary to HK$650, to match the salary to T$800, which is right now impossible.

\"Maybe, we can do it step by step. So right now, we have agreed with the Indonesian supplier for the salary of S$450.\"

Many employment agencies in Singapore support the move.

The higher salary will not benefit the agencies or the suppliers, as there will be no change in the foreign placement fee.

Employment agencies said the change can help remove unhealthy practices among the agencies.

Tay Khoon Beng, director, Best Home Employment Agency, said: \"If we don't have enough supply to applicants in the first place, eventually more and more agencies will poach one another's maids and offer 10 and 20 dollars increase in salary and transfer these helpers among Singaporean employers and this is even a worse scenario for us.\"

Employment agencies said it is up to employers to increase the salary of existing maids. They are also wary of the possibility of a small group of maids who may try to terminate their contracts so that they can be re-employed with the better salary.

Some employers feel any salary increase has to be gradual.

Samuel Teo, an employer of an Indonesian maid, said: \"The other thing is that I also feel that, of course, when you pay more, you're expecting a very high quality from the maid. Will the maid be able to deliver?\"

More than 70 per cent of maids working in Singapore are Indonesians and employment agencies said demand for these maids is still strong.

With the proposed salary increase for Indonesian maids, employment agencies also hope to increase the retention rate, giving them the incentive to work longer in Singapore.

Ha ha, Mrs Seah, good point. Should ask the agency also if it means that maids will have NO problems communicating, and will know how to do housework or childcare (whatever they are hired to do).

Now I stressed. New Indo. maid now commands SGD450 pay per month! Wow, this is not much lower than my current very good maid's pay! I now stressed to increase her pay, if not, she may feel really unjustified and may not want to continue working for me. She has 5 years ex-SG experience and now into the 4th year working for me, therefore total 9 years in SG experience. To be fair to her, I think I got to increase her pay to at least SGD 550 or SGD600 almost immediately! She is already telling me a maid with 10 years experience is getting SGD800 with a yearly increase of SGD50.

Although I think she is worth it but the announcement created stress for me to increase fast and high!

My friend's maid worked for her for 4 years. Just before going home for 3 weeks, she wants an increment from $380 to $450. Then before flying home, she wants to increase to $500. My friend needs her, so no choice have to agree.

                Hi janet_lee,

Actually I already told my maid at the beginning of the year I will increase her pay to SGD500 in Jan2011 and will increase somemore when she renew her contract with me in Aug2011 and she was so happy! But now with the announcement, wah lau, what seems to be a good increment is no longer good comparing to what was reported ie. ex-SG is at least SGD500 per month now! Therefore I must increase more for my maid lor and I am sure I will look like an employer being held hostage when I tell her I will increase even more for her given the annoucement!

The other way we can cut cost is to have a prior agreement that the maid has to buy her own daily amenities since her pay is higher now.

I make her pay for her own toiletries - sanitary pads, soap, shampoo, toothpaste since she will treasure and use them longer as compared to employer providing them.

                    Hi DesertWind,
This new announcement will make employers at the mercy of the maids...if employer doesn't increase to $450, then maids will drop hints frequently :x to get message across. If objective not achieved, then attitude problem will worsen.
What's the meaning of this increment ? New maids with absolutely no experience working in a household to be paid $450 !!! Vomit blood + hand-holding for few first months, then just when you think more independent, the maids think they can fly.

I would agree personally. But the agent ever told me before that I should have to provide her with basic amenities (ie shampoo/soap) - and that agent is a distant relative...so I don't really think she will side with the maid. Apparently it's a MOM thing.

Between rock and hard place. Tell me if more women are not going to consider staying at home.

I provided soap, shampoo, toothpaste and toilet roll during the 8 months when maid received $20. When she had more pay, she would have to pay for her own toiletries but toilet roll still on me.
With higher pay for maids now, I think more women will consider quitting esp with kids in primary school.
