      INNOVATE:

Strong in general academic - RI/RGS/HCI/NGHS

Strong in math and science - NUSH*
Strong in music/visual or performing arts - SOTA*
      Strong in sports - SSP*
These specialised instituitions* are talent schools and nation's top PSLE pupils cannot get in just thru pure academics.

Regarding if it is easier to get into a school over another school via DSA, it is quite relative but the above basically summarises it all.

Hence, to majority of the RPGS GEP, it is certainly easier to get into RGS/NYGH than NUSH via DSA. But to a non-GEP girl who has Math and Science talent, then it would be easier for her to be accepted by NUSH than RGS/NYGH via DSA.

Regarding the claim that 50 GEP/50 mainstream from RGPS who got into RGS via DSA, I think there might be some misunderstanding there. It is a known fact that it is very hard for mainsteam students to get into RGS via DSA. So if you ask me, 4 is a more likely figure. Could the 50 or so mainsteam students figure be referring to the total number who eventually got it after S1-posting results were released?

I have been following closely these chats here . Did'nt know things can get so hot :x some time between parents .... Never mind as I personally believe it actually provide new insights rather ..

Like matadorepy (must have met/chat with you on briefing day ? ) ,I am a parent of RGPS GEP in NUSH this year. I was kind of disappointed that there are so few girls (29) in this year extremely small cohort of 138 vs 400/450 in RGS/RI.

I actually manage to chat with a key people (wont name their appointment else somebody quote me ) why the no is so small (after all provision is for 170) and so few girls actually got enrolled. His answer was this year PSLE Cohort was a few thousand less and NUSH intakes via DSA is extremely stringent. They emphasis quality which they sieved thru their internal testing rather than just meeting no of placings available. Also quite a no of them with multiple COs eventually turned down NUSH for named schools. The school only replaced those turn down cases with the selected no of small WaitList which incidentally was also poor as those also selected other CO over NUSH. Ask if they able doubt their intakes PSLE result, the guy feedback was \" unless you doubt your own testing process and criteria, PSLE (unless failed) is immaterial for the few no of so called under performance..\" Like the person said, \"If you can have a NUSH CO/WL, chances are you are already got CO in RGS/RI/HCI/ACS ... but not the vice versa .. after all we are still far more stringent than the best IP schools in general \"

How easy is it to get into NUSH as a GEP/Mainstream/Olympiad Medalist? It is still through the 2 round of testings same for all. I leave it to you to decide. I glad my DD was offered a place, a 2-2-2 modular system with No national examination. A few RGPS friends did not got in are 😞 in RGS/NYGH . Already she is full swing into triple science while her peers in IPs school are still ra ra over orientations and CCA. She is the kind of personality that fits well into the school system.

for most schools, new sec 1 students will be allocated classes according to the ranking of their PSLE results, with the best classes being called 1A,1B,1C…etc, E1,E2,E3, or 1/1,1/2,1/3, etc.

what about Crescent Girls Sec School? How are the Sec 1 students grouped into? are they also allocated classes in alphabetical/numerical order, with the better classes being A,B,C… and 1,2,3… ???

not necessary that best class must start with 1 or A...and if the school says there is no best class, then believe

for some schools, best class label is also random and they use a different letter / number from year to year. there is no acknowledgement from school to say which is best class

Living vicariously through our children I see....... 😉

I am thoroughly impressed with the way that NUSHS have positioned and pitched themselves. From a institution with zero history and tradition, they have managed, by limiting intake, and setting tough entry criteria, transmorgified themselves from a potential ugly duckling into beautiful swan in short order. And guess what, having swiped the cream (or part of the cream), and not participating in national (benchmarking) exams, how can they go wrong??

Don't get me wrong, I am not taking a swipe at NUSHS. Its 2 bus stops from where I live and my boys (if by slim chance decide to be clever enough) may still consider it a choice. But right now, at least a part of it is hype. Strong schools with strong traditions, to me, are still the preferred choice.

in fact, some schools would like to use \"A\" for the worst class
Just like in DHS, \"3 A\" is the worst class which is the \"O\" level class (students are stream by end of sec2).

but no track record leh....., plus as I said, limit intake, set admission test, and suddenly they are an elite school?? Seems a little far-fetched to me.

140 of them based on their own selection criteria; some scored in PSLE from 240 all the way to 27x…but PSLE is not the benchmark, so not fair to judge them by PSLE score. everyone has a bad day some day

no need to sit for O or A level, certainly a very attractive option

what is the benchmark to enter NUS / NTU / SMU or Oxford/Cambridge or the Ivy ?

or is it a guaranteed entry to NUS regardless ? what if not good enough for NUS, where to go ?

for HCI, we know certain categories of students who meet certain benchmark has direct entry into the Big 4 in China

Who says they have no track record? In the 2010 International Olympiads for Science and Mathematics (most prestigious Math & Science competitions for high school students), NUS High garnered a total of 7 medals, same number as RI. Hwa Chong got 2 medals. Other JCs like VJC, NJC and IP schools like Dunman High and RV got nothing. http://www.moe.gov.sg/media/press/2010/07/2010-international-olympiad-science-mathematics.php.

In the Singapore Maths Olympiad Junior Section, NUS High was the champion team for the last 2 years. Also, For Singapore Physics Olympiad, and the Junior Physics and Chemistry Olympiads, NUS High was one of the top two performing institutions, beating HCI pants off.

Come on ! NUS high has already selected the cream of the crop of those maths and science olympiads ( platimum receivers) during the DSA exercise. Obviously, they can produce stunning results. Unfair comparisons being made.
