Actually, the answer booklet states \"had stayed\". But why? I find it hard to explain the difference between had ____and has _____.

Can an expert here help out?
      It should be \"has stayed\".

This link (coutesy of autor2001) is very good. http://www.englishpage.com/verbpage/pastperfect.html

Tommy _____________in that cottage before, but now he is staying somewhere else.

        (1) had stayed
        (2) has stayed
        Hi

My take is to use the past perfect tense(had stayed) in this instance because now he is staying somewhere else suggests that he’s no longer living there.

        Best wishes

Thanks, iFruit, for the link on that very informative website! I got the answer now, has to be "had stayed", according to the explanation on that website. Now know how to explain the difference btw has____and had ___ to my kid.

          Thanks too Tianzhu!

It should be \"ordered\". As the events are close together (as soon as ), the past simple tense should be used.

                  Hi

These two actions happened one after another. First she soaked the vegetables and then she fried them.

                  I’d go for option(2)

Julie fried the vegetables after she soaked them.

                      Hi

It’s inappropriate to use had ordered ( Past Perfect Tense) in this case.

The past perfect is used when we want to make it clear that the first event was completed before the second started.

The first event (launching of book) started before the second event(ordering of book).Hence using had ordered suggests that Rozita ordered the book before its launch.

As soon as suggests a new activity starts exactly after the first one ends, therefore ordered (past tense) is a better choice here.

                      Best wishes
