A simple dish the boys love is stew thin slices of potatoes in dried shrimps/chopped garlic/bits of gingers with soya sauce + oyster sauce diluted with water.

They love potatoes, anything with potatoes is well accepted. A simple baked mashed potato with minced beef + frozen veg,. microwave potato gratin with sausages, potatoes strips with sunny-side-up.

Or steamed minced pork with tong chai, topped with beaten eggs, steamed marinated pork slices.

I found fresh silver fish int he wet mkt recently. Been mixing these with chopped prawns and cooking these in watery porridge. Or use for frying fried rice.

You see, I am not a good cook πŸ˜‰

Err...don't know which one to vote. Eating out may not be cheaper. I know how to cook simple meals and love to eat home cooked food but dislike cooking. Razz

Sometimes buying the ingredients can be more expensive than eating out - at least for me, we normally cook for 5-7 adults with 4-dish meal, the ingredients cost more than eating out at the hawker stall.
        westmom:
Hmm...i love to eat but never have a chance to really cook. Born youngest in the family so always ended up with washing dishes duties. When I got married, i make sure I get a maid who cooks well...and being a full time working mom, again no chance to find out whether I have the talent or not! But every now and then, I look out for recipes for my maid to try out..
Most indo. can cook, you still consider lucky to get one can cook well and learn new recipes fast.
I know how to cook so standard for a helper that can cook is high, I make sure she can cook before hiring and cooking is at the top of my list.

I love to cook for family but nowadays really no time. The last time I cook was a few days ago, kinda impromptu - western food, baking and simple frying only.

Talking about potatoes, learn this simple baked potatoes from my sis, it's a hit during the X'mas gathering.

I just baked this last week for my tod and me as lunch:

            Baked Potatoes
            (with Cheese, Egg & Cream)
            (Portion serves 2 -3)
Double if you're making for more in larger container.
            Preparation time : 20 min
            Cooking time : 60 min

            Ingredients:
            *6 medium size potatoes
            * 1/2 Cup Mixed shredded cheese (Mozzarella, Parmesan & Cheddar) - i used Perfect Italiano's Pizza Plus
            *1 egg
*Whipping Cream / Double Cream / Full Cream -250g
(use more if you like it wetter)
            *Salt & Pepper

            Methods:
preheat oven to 200oc - i use my 10-YO 2-in-1 microwave cum convection oven - save kitchen space and multi-functional
            1) peel and slice potatoes into 5mm thickness (cut at short side)\t

            2) boil some water in pot then put in the sliced potatoes to cook for 10 min, drain and let cool.

            3) use the same/separate pot - pour the cream and use low heat to just warm the cream, stir for 5 min or until warm (**not hot or boiled)\t

            4) remove pot from heat, add pinch of salt and pepper, egg, then stir to mix (incl york-break it using fork and stir into mixture)\t

            5) in a baking tray (use disposable aluminum ones to save the washing), lay 1/2 the cooled potatoes in rows, overlapping each other.

            4) pour half of the cream/egg mixture on the potatoes, then sprinkle 1/3 of the cheese on top\t

            5) lay the remaining potatoes on top, pour rest of cream, then add all remaining cheese on top.\t

            6) put in oven to bake for about 45-60min, or until liquid become custardy, use a fork to poke to the bottom , if no watery liquid flow out, and cheese already brown at top layer, it's ready to serve.\t

Best eat when hot - cover with foil if serving later. Serve with fish/pork chop / beef steak & salad for heartier meal.

            Well, does it sound simple?

Can consider, perhaps state the reason like, 'want the best nutritions/ balanced meal for kids' OR 'nothing better to do anyway' HA! :rotflmao: - just kidding

You're a good example for mums here to follow, why not start a campaign to encourage all SAHMs to cook for family?

Me-depending too much on helper, and lazy to put my hands in although she'll do the washing/prep works. πŸ˜›
