Grass root leaders contribute to the community while PV to the school. Both contribute but in diff ways. Think they shd both be rewarded with phase 2B.

The parents in Phase 2A contribute in many ways to their alma mater too. Raising funds for the school, building up the school's reputation and track record, organizing/participating in alumni activities. So they are no less deserving than any other parent.
There is no absolutely fair system and I think the current system is as reasonable as it can get. -
I agree there is no system that is fair to everyone.

Places in 2A are effectively guaranteed. In effect, 100% of places could be taken up at phase 2A. And these students could be living beyond 2km.
2B and 2C will have no chance at all though they may live just next door. -

alumni’s kids deserves priority
well known schools with well established tradition and popularity inevitably has lots to do with an active alumni, and are mostly aided schools with strong support from the clans and the churches
some schools have been around for so long yet not popular. why ? -
After all these grouses what do you suggest then? Do away with all the priorities save for the ones given to siblings and go purely on distance? Then you will have whole new set of problems.

Even though I have gone through the drilling process of P1 registration still I feel its quite fair and everyone can see whats happening rather than one doesnt even know their chances....
Agree. I can only be envious of those whose parents had foresight to put their kids in 'elite' schools. But then I know what the system is and what to do. My child is not in an elite school (I don't think his school is that category), but 2 weeks on, I'm happy where he is and he's happy.
However, there are some parents I've met who are resolutely 'un-kiasu' in their kids' early years. Tried selling the idea that they should consider PV etc early enough...but kena brushed off as 'ks' (with a negative connotation). When they realise that they cannot get into the school next door, then all hell breaks loose. Sigh...
Perhaps mcys should include a 'preparing parents for P1 registration' pack in the newborn kit. Ha ha ha. -
Think the main frustration is for those staying very near branded school and yet do no have a place there and have to spend time to travel to some other school. It does seem unfair and does not justify the priority based on proximity that MOE states.
To make it fairer I suppose, MOE can introduce less than 0.5km, then maybe it will appease those who really stay next door and cannot get a place? otherwise, like what everyone said, its as fair as it gets.
Then again, I have always heard that branded school esp those with gifted only focus their resources on gifted students to bring glory to their school, so may not be the best school if your kid is not gifted. In fact, a good neighbourhood school which is not top rated but maybe middle rated may be better for those kid? Not sure how true but case of better be a big fish in a small pond that a small fish in the ocean. So, if your kid gets to be among the top classes in a normal school, he/she will also get the best resources, i suppose? -
Just for discussion sake.
If places of P2A and all phases after are allocated by distance, wouldn't it cause the value of houses/apartments/hdbs which are within 1km to double or triple in time to come? Then those wanting to buy but cannot afford will go for another round of complaint...............this doesn't looks like a solution at all.............. :?
