Just for discussion sake.
If places of P2A and all phases after are allocated by distance, wouldn't it cause the value of houses/apartments/hdbs which are within 1km to double or triple in time to come? Then those wanting to buy but cannot afford will go for another round of complaint...............this doesn't looks like a solution at all.............. :?
then people can also complain about siblings....may be second child have higher priority than third child.......lol
even for distance, when come to crunch time, people will say ground floor nearer than another kid staying at 10th floor of the same block...... -
But somehow I feel that giving those with siblings and parents are alumni priorities in the registration process seemed fair................is like, they belonged to the family.....

May be MOE should consider adding another phase, to let the kids take entry test and so they can get into the schools via merit (aka DSA at P1). This will allow those who have no relationship with the schools nor have money to move within 1km a chance to get into their dream schools. I know some people would say that this is going to stress the kids even more and earlier…but our system is already in this way. Again, there is no perfect solution.

Taking entry test.........sounds interesting and you are right those without relationship and means to buiy property finally find it hard to complaint. But then again, someone will say only those can afford hires many tutors to coach their child to gain an advantage and score better at the test.......... :stupid:

I heard from my ex-boss this is the practice in Hong Kong. Her daughter needs to attend interview and sit for entry test -

I understand what you said and I do not disagree. However, we have to face the reality that the tough competition is already happening, and I think it will get worse. The entry test is just to give one more option. More options is better than no option. right? Besides, not all need to take entry test to gain access to their schools of choices. Those parents who are alumni, those have slidings are still guaranteed a place. Some go for PV, clans, Churches, grassroot leaders' routes may still go ahead, each to their own. Why not?ycpang:

I suppose the issue here is that (some) parents may end up transferring the pressure that was initially burdened upon them (previous options) on their kids if an entry test is involved.
As someone mentioned earlier, hot-housing measures may be implemented on the kids way b4 they are due to take their tests, further robbing them of their childhood.
Its one thing for the parents to be under pressure during the registration exercise because they are adults, they can handle it and most importantly they have a choice whether they want to go through that pressure or not. But, for the kids, would they really be given the choice?
Is that fair to them??
I am speaking from the perspective of a parent who has yet to decide whether to apply for PV in a 'dream' school. That would also mean moving house to better my DS's chances, though also no guarantee (sometimes).
I am still convincing myself whether it would be worth going thru the pressure and the upheaval. I mean, any parent would do as much as they can for their child's best. But on the other hand, it takes more than a 'dream' school for a child to excel well in exams/life. There's more at stake here ie development of sound principles, all-rounded character etc ... which cannot be depended solely on the school to nurture.
Perhaps I hold an idealistic view in this fast paced and competitive world for many .....
