Dear Ifruit, thanks a ton! explanations were clear.
Let breadth = bhashroop:
Pls help :
The volume of a rectangular tank is 162litters. It's length is twice its breadth and 2/3 its height. Find the length of the tank.
Maths guru kindly help.
Greatly appreciated
length = 2b
height = 3/2 (2b) = 3b
volume = length x breadth x height = 2b x b x 3b = 6xbxbxb = 162---->b x b x b=27 = 3x3x3----> b=3
length = 2b =6

Dear Yu Xuan, thanks a million! explanations were clear and precise.

Maths guru kindly help.
Greatly appreciated
Breadth --> 1 unit
Height --> 3 units
162 L --> 162000 cm3
2u * 1u * 3u --> 162000
6 * u * u * u --> 162000
u * u * u --> 162000 / 6 =27000
30 * 30 * 30 --> 27000
Hence , 1 unit is 30cm.
Length --> 2 units * 30cm = 60cm

$260 is to be divided among a certain number of people. If half of the people receive $3 each, one-eighth of the people receive $2 each and the rest $4 each, how many people are there altogether ?

Divide the people into 8 units (based on 1/8 of the people):
1/2 => 4 units (recieved $3 each) x $3 = $12u
1/8 => 1 unit (recieved $2 each) x $2 = $2u
Remaining => 8 - 4 - 1 = 3u (received $4 each) x $4 = $12u
Total amount of money = $260 => $12u + $2u + $12u = $26u
$26 u -> 260
$1 u -> 260/6 = 10
Altogether there were 8 units of people
8 u -> 80 people -

3/5 of Joel’s savings is equal to 2/7 of Matthew’s savings. The difference in their saving is equal to 1/2 of Ben’s savings. Joel saves $24 less than Ben.

3/5 of Joel's savings means Joel has 5 units.3/5 of Joel's savings is equal to 2/7 of Matthew's savings. The difference in their saving is equal to 1/2 of Ben's savings. Joel saves $24 less than Ben.
Find the total amount of saving of the 3 boys.
2/7 of Matthew's savings means Matthew has 7 units.
*The above units are not equal, so we cannot compare directly.
However, we know:
3 units of Joel = 2 units of Matthew.

J : M
6 : 6 (making them EQUAL)
Now, we do the same for the above units that have:
J : M
5 x 2 : 3 x 7
10: 21
DIfference in their savings: 11 units = 1/2 of Ben (which means that Ben has 22 units).
22units - 10units = 12units -> $24 (Joel saves $24 less than Ben)
Total amount: 10 + 21 + 22 = 53 units -> $106 -

Hi Mrs Wong,
Thank you for the fast response, really appreciate it.
Pls correct me if I am wrong .....
12u = $24
1u = $2
Total : 10 + 21 + 22 = 53
53 x $2 = $106
Kindly explain if the above is correct.
Thanks -

Yes, it is:
22units - 10units = 12units -> $24 (Joel saves $24 less than Ben)
Total amount: 10 + 21 + 22 = 53 units -> $106 -
