              Dear all parents,

I think some of those who read my blog has mistaken that I am using the flash card method. There is one mommy who even confused my method with the Glenn Doman method.

The fact is that I never \"flash\" cards to my kids. I also have never used the Glenn Doman method (I am not even sure what it is).

Here's the page in my blog which describes the method that I used to teach phonics.
              http://tamarindphonics.blogspot.com/2008/08/how-to-teach-phonics.html

I think the first photo may lead people to jump into conclusion that I am using flash cards. I hope that my explanation from steps 1 to 7 are clear enough. The cards are given to my boy so that he can put it under the correct position, for example \"cat\" under \"at\", and \"can\" under \"an\". This is very different from \"flashing\" the cards, because when you flash the cards, the child has nothing to do. He is a passive learner. The problem with flashing cards is that you can flash a hundred times, the child may just be thinking of something else and not learning.

But when I give the card to my boy, he becomes an active learner. He looks at the card and think, where should he put it ? He has to think and remember what he has learnt before, and then apply it correctly.

Step 7 is actually most important. I mixed up the cards. Then I say a word, and ask my boy to pick up the correct card. This really makes him pay attention and think so that he can pick up the correct card.

I am sharing my method because I think it has worked wonderfully well with my boy, who has a very short attention span and cannot sit still. When learning phonics with me, his itchy fingers always have something to do.

I don't think that this is the best method which will suit every child. I encourage other parents to develop their own methods to suit their own child.

Hopefully other parents do not mistake my method with the flash card method šŸ˜‰

                Hi Wan,

                Wan:
my son actually asked me, 'mummy, only 4 pages ah??'

any other phonics books to share?
I just purchased Ladybird Phonics Series - Book 2 - 'Splat Cat' and Book 3 - 'Hot Fox' from Popular. They have the more advance books as well but I refrained myself from buying the whole lot..

Also found a good Phonics book in Woodlands library \"Pig Wig\" has readings on 'ig', 'at' and 'ug' family. The middle face remained the same then when you flip every other page (whole in the middle) the face is then the face for the CAT or BAT...DD1 loved it.. psst... can also DIY based on similar idea.. šŸ˜‰

Also bought some books from the Peter and Jane series... šŸ˜‰

                    tamarind & all,

I have been an avid reader of ur thread since I joined KSP forum, but didn't contribute as I'm as new to phonics as my 4yo son who attends pcf. in the 70s, the term 'phonics' was unheard of, but I think we still learn pronunciation of words similarly

I hate flashcards and use traditional reading methods which I enjoy bonding with my children. recently, I bought 2 books 'bat's hats' http://brainytots.multiply.com/photos/album/14/Board_Book#134 & 'bug's mug' http://brainytots.multiply.com/photos/album/14/Board_Book#135
for them. the turning wheel seems like a good idea, although the board books are rather thin. my son actually asked me, 'mummy, only 4 pages ah??'

an idea came to mind. I was thinking of adopting the same idea of a turning wheel and DIY using a paper plates. anyone tried similar 'craft' or teaching materials? any other phonics books to share?
