PIONEER BATCH AT NUS HIGH SCHOOL
      NUS High's 1st graduates
      By Jennani Durai

THEY were among the top pupils of their Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) and they chose to take a chance with a brand-new school.

The pioneer batch of 173 students who had been through the full six-year programme at NUS High School of Mathematics and Science graduated on Monday.

Students like valedictorian Donovan Loh say that while it had been hard deciding between NUS High School and other established top schools, they made the right choice.

'I had some fear that the school was so new, but I was certain enough about NUS High School that I applied through Direct School Admission and didn't apply anywhere else,' said Donovan, 18, a former Pasir Ris Primary School student who obtained a PSLE aggregate score of 270. He graduated on Tuesday with High Distinction and is hoping for a Ministry of Education teaching scholarship to study biology in Imperial College.

More top universities have recognised the unique NUS High School diploma, including Oxford University, Cambridge University, Harvard University and Stanford University, said principal Dr Hang Kim Hoo.

He said: 'There were many challenges that had to be overcome before we arrived at where we are today. When the school just started, the first bold step had to be taken to move away from the tried-and-tested route of the 'O' and 'A' level examinations.'

But I thought the very first batch graduate in 2008 with 88 students. Correct me if I am wrong ? :?

may be that batch did not start with sec 1, started with sec 3

if their graduates are not highly valued, then the school is a failure, having targeted and attracted students who are supposedly among the brightest in the land.

Happy Lunar New Year everyone !

2 batches were admitted in 2005 - one batch of 88 students was taken in at Year 3 and graduated in 2008 and another batch was taken in at Year 1 and went through the entire 6 years of NUSH programme and graduated in 2010. So when NUSH started in 2005, there were only 2 levels - Year 1 and Year 3.

OIC. So by now they would have gained ample experience from these pioneer batches to remake /revamp their curriculum for the respective foundation/advance/specialisation years. Thanks.

Agreed. I think it is also important for the school to continuously fine tune the curriculum so as to attract brighter students. Without A Level, the school also needs to make sure that its curriculum is good enough so that it could \"sell\" itself to various universities in the world and get recognition for its diploma. I understand that most of first batch of 88 graduates had received multiple offers from various top universities around the world. Quite a feat.

The expectation from this NUS affiliated high school is very very high indeed. I told DD she will have to pull up her sock once in the year 3 to year 6. She is still enjoying her 'honeymoon' period in year1.

For 2010 batch about half of cohort graduated with high distinction or distinction, the rest with merit and passes.

See this article - NUS faculty co-authors quantum physics textbook with NUS High School students

                  18 October 2010

Assoc Prof Valerio Scarani from the Centre for Quantum Technologies and NUS High School students Ms Lynn Chua and Ms Liu Shiyang have recently co-authored \"Six Quantum Pieces\", a quantum physics textbook published by World Scientific Publishing Company. Aimed at high school students, first year undergraduates and university faculty specialising in physics, computer science and computer engineering, the book covers topics such as quantum cryptography, quantum cloning and quantum teleportation.

Is it compulsory for all NUSH students to participate in all the Math Olympiads? For the recent American Math Competition, did the Year 1 & 2 students take part in AMC 8, 10 or 12? Or all?
