Choosing and Evaluating Primary Schools

Nan Hua is a SAP school which uses English and Chinese as first language...so it uses Higher Chinese (compulsory). There is an equal no of hours spent on both languages every week.
From what I understand, Rulang is also rather academic focused too. Do consider your options carefully.

I heard about the parents' comments on Rulang. And I am sure Rulang will continue to be academic focus after their PSLE success last year. But I find Rulang's management and teachers young and energetic. They are very committed. An example is last year, they have developed and launched an enterprenurship program for all levels. I am very impressed cos other schools would have purchased an off-shelf similar program or outsource to someone else to deliver the program and get the parents to pay.

I like Nanhua's traditional culture and the bonds among the stakeholders of the school. Last year, I ever sat in their general office for about 2-3 hours (waiting) and I really like what I saw that day. A retired teacher, (around 60+ 70 years old and has problems walking) came back to school to provide assistance for SYF dance. I like what I am seeing as this is exactly the same culture I am experiencing in my elder dd's school, which is my alma mater.

Hi, I'm thinking of registrating my child at CHIJ St Nicholas primary in abt 2 yrs time. I heard from some relatives that I have to start 'doing something' now like volunteering at the school, calling the principal etc. :shock:


Are there any other things I can do to help my child gain entry to that school? I am not an alumni of that school and not staying within 1km (actually it's only slightly over 1km). So not sure if the chances are good...Anyone can advise?

Hi, Im not sure if my news is still reliable as I called 2 mths ago in Dec. But the Admin at CHIJ St Nic told me that they can only accept PV (parents volunteer) from parents who stay within 1 km of the school. You may want to ring up the school to confirm.

Based on past few years' balloting history (except 2010's intake), pls. refer to below link, balloting applied to both Phases 2B and 2C, within 1 km. You may want to call the school to find out more on the PV.

SIL's daughter is at St Nicholas...SIL told me very few made it to do PV...but of course no harm calling up the school to find out more. SIL managed to do so as they are Catholics and stayed within 1km.

thanks for your responses. I will call up the school to check. But based on your replies, looks like my girl's chances of getting into CHIJ is low cos we don't live within 1 km and are not Catholics.

Would like to solicit some opinions and comparisons on Nanhua and Rulang. Distance is not an issue and I could register my ds in both schools under the same phase. Thanks very much!

I will choose Nanhua. It is not only a SAP school but it also offers GEP Programme. A lot of students who cannot get in GEP after the 2nd round will try to transfer to Nanhua in P4.

I am clueless upon which school to go for.
I am resiting at Taman Jurong, means distance to both schools are quite the same.
I probably lean towards NH, but worried about my chance in this phase. Parents.. anyone has clued of my chance to NH this year? Do you all think I have already confirmed a place as being a PV in NH?
If I am not successful in phase 2B in NH, do I still stand a chance with SV? Under what phase?
I would like to gather some opinions and comparisons on these schools from everyone.

if the PV numbers exceed the available places, there will be balloting by distance. Taman Jurong is more than 2 km from NH.

it is unlikely to be risky under Phase 2A at SV

however if you are registered at SV, you need to withdraw first before you can register at NH

not only that, once you withdraw from sv (phase 2a) and register at nh (phase 2b) should you be unsuccessful in getting a place at nh, you cant go back to sv and reclaim your confirmed place.


you can only register at either sv or nh under phase 2c.
