When we registered son in school, I didn't tell him the school is this or that...just told him, 'Kindergarten days are over. It's REAL school now. Please listen to your teachers and study'.

you should expect a school with 90 years history, producing more than 80% of each cohort scoring 4As or 4A* to be HOT, with each year having 460 to 480 students graduating, and more than 30% gaining DSA entry and more than 43% scoring 250 or higher.


the previous principals have made sure to match the number of PV slots to the available vacancies. that is being responsible. not sure how other school does it. the school mostly do not take in PV who stay far away in case of balloting being needed. in some years there were PV staying 15km away but they got in without having to ballot.

I also know of cases whereby PVs having chalked the hours but could not get the place. They were put on priority when vacancies arises during the school term. I've friends whose kids transferred to their school of choice once there were vacancies.

if parents are kiasu or better informed, they should have earlier on enquired with the target school when is the earliest enrollment time for PV and which types of duties are available, and go cheong for it. that would avoid lots of disappointment

if a parent knows the school is hot, they should expect the PV slots to be filled up fast too. MOE guideline is just guideline on PV time frame. if the school is hot then parents who are keen to do PV there should not wait till last minute to find out no more slot liao....and then come here and complain 'unfair', 'not transparent'....bla bla bla.....if they want it, go get it - EARLY. if they miss it - don't complain. blame their complacency, or blame their lack of resourcefulness.

and so it is reported that some schools PV slots have long waiting list. just like some kindy, waiting list starts a few months after child birth, perhaps even before end of confinement month.

for those schools that give out almost hundred or more PV slots a year, that is being plain irresponsible on the part of the school principal, when they can't fulfill it.

I certainly hope not as it defeats the purpose of schools doing away with exams for P1 and P2 children. But then again, this method was used widely in HK where slots in hot schools were highly contested.

Will we follow HK's footsteps? Looking down the road, if there are more and more complaints about the unfairness of the PV selection system, the ministry or the school might just consider adopting this school extrance exam system for the 6 year old.............. :!:

Yes, HongKongers also buy houses near school of choice...no different from us. But we have done away with exams for P1/2. If MOE sets entrance exam, that is really contradicting what they have mentioned earlier. If parents are not happy with PV, I guess this whole thing would be removed one day...leaving Phase 2B with grassroots and church in that category.

Instead of doing away with PV, there has been discussion here that the system could be improvised.

One of the main unhappiness arises from the selection process. The other is underutilising of time and skills of parents that are \"professionals\".

Possible ways to address the above could be:

1) tansparent selection such as balloting
2) Not sure if should segregate distance for balloting at this stage
3) once balloted, those \"professionals\" has the option to give up if they think the jobs assigned undermine their professionalism and hence give the opportunity to another parent on reserve list
4) to limit to small number of PV so they are assured of a slot during registration
