Instead of doing away with PV, there has been discussion here that the system could be improvised...

If professionals are chosen to be PVs, what 'jobs' would they want to take on that do not undermine their professional status ? Offer medical or legal advice to the school ?
Parents have written into ST to voice their unhappiness of PV to register their kids in the school. Selection of PVs is done by higher authority in the school. Is it possible to be transparent ?

The whole Pri school registration sy begs review…

1.\tHome-school proximity…Is it logical for children living just next to sch not to secure a place under P2C and for another living at the other end of the island getting in under 2A?
2.\tPV…Seriousy how many PVs are blue collared workers? Do these parents not care for their children education? More likely they are working hard to feed the family, where to find time for PV?
Then wouldn’t the playing field for PV ony the professionals?
3.\tPopular schools …TUR till 2A already so high and 2B filled by kids with professional parents/assoc to clans. Where do this leave the kids with working class parents? Are they just condemn to study in neighbourhood schools? Does popular school then equate to elitist schools?

Lest it be taken wrongly, as a concept, I have no issue with professionals taking on menial tasks. There is no honest work that I consider to be below me. Heck, during NS, I spent a few months on the toilet cleaning crew, but we made sure it was the cleanest darn toilet in the camp

Its not about humility or status, but utilisation.

          Just does not add up.

Why have a parent do traffic duties? If he is picked as a 'PV', lets just be honest about and say, hey, pay your way and hire a guard who can be there more consistently, do a better job, and let you get on with your life. More logical than the pretense that professional parent, already preselected via an opaque process (except TNS), now donning a bib and brandishing a stop-sign, is somehow a demonstration of egalitarianism and fairness.

          It is not.

                      Active discussions here... 😉

Ok, my first post in the year of the rabbit, hopefully I won't offend anyone here.

Yes, it is indeed illogical that children living next door to a school cannot secure a place while one who is living 10 or 20kms away can.

But honestly, how many parents out there would be so insane as to send their children to a school that is so away? I like to think they are the minority.

If the current system were to be changed such that Phase 1 and 2 are subject to some cap, I suspect most parents in these phases would just move nearer to the school. It again goes back to the question of who can afford that address that is within 1km of the popular school. Even if the rule is changed to 0.5km or 5km, property prices within whichever range it may be would definitely be impacted.

Does it change anything or help level the playing field for the less well-off or stop elitism from happening? With more PRs who are well-off enough to buy properties near good schools, wouldn't the ordinary folks here get even more squeezed out (alumni from good schools can also be ordinary folks 😉)?

Also, how does paying someone to do the PV level the playing field? Does 3boys really think that the selected PV should pay a more suitable person to do the job, or have I misunderstood his comment? Not everyone has the ability to pay hor, but everyone does have some time to spare. Whether you choose to use your leave days to do PV, or take the quality time that you could otherwise spend with your children to do PV, or better still, need not take leave from work but just wake up earlier everyday to be the lollipop man, it's all a matter of choice. Nothing to do with lowering productivity here. While there are parents who are willing to do anything for their children (and let's respect these parents for their efforts), there are also parents who wouldn't care enough to part with their time in this manner.

I haven't done PV, lest someone thinks I have. On the other hand, I am also aware of certain less desirable things that people do to be in that phase. Yes, we could do with better transparency in some schools, but even if we choose a system based totally on distance, there would be people who cheat and try to beat the system too. So what is the best system?

As for balloting, unless you have personally gone through one yourself, that is a stress that we should not subject the majority of the parents to. Having gone through it myself, I would rather wish that everyone plans early for gaining entry into that choice school, instead of leaving it to a matter of luck.
