        Faun:

What kind of music exam do they take?
        Are there music competitions
WhAt performance platform do they have for the students.
How are the kids challenged musically other then taking music exam
How many instruments must they do?
aRe they kids allowed to be attached to an external orchestra while in SOTA?
They just do their internal exams. Any external exams eg. ABRSM/TRINITY etc are all optional and self funded.

Music Competitions eg. Overseas, NAC etc...are optional too and funding depending on SOTA's discretion.

Performance platform in the form of evening concerts, masterclasses with reknown artiste, overseas universities, external organisation collaboration with SOTA or faculty's teacher concert etc...

Overseas summer camps, music festivals etc....are all part of music faculty activities. Students must apply to SOTA for such trips. Fundings are shared by student and SOTA from what I know to date.

SOTA students are encouraged to join an orchestra eg. SNYO etc otherwise they have their SOTA ensemble group.

My daughter is a music student there.

I am interested to register my daughter for SOTA TA. I hope she can get into the Visual Arts school, but I am not sure what the environment is like there. Mainly I am not sure what kind of students they have there as my girl is the type who is easily influence by friends so I am afraid she will mix with the wrong company. Anyone has any advice?

Think grade 5 is the min requirement for Ballet. Correct me if I am wrong.

This is unlike other schools during DSA - where they only take in those who are competition prizewinners. I accompanied a friend's son for SOTA dsa 2 years ago. The teachers in the audition even helped him along at his weaker parts - very nice. Like they really wanted to try and see if he could do better. But really , that boy didn't put in enough practise. They were given 3 weeks to work on the set piece, but he worked on it only 2 days before. He didn't get in.

Does anyone have a child attending SOTA? I am thinking of possibilities for my daughter. We have a long way to go still (she’s in P3) but would like to hear from parents who have kids studying there. Thanks!

Heh, I finally found my post 🙂

The earlier threads have been really useful, thanks to everyone for sharing your knowledge and experience.

My little girl is in P3 and is taking her Grade 1 RAD exam next month and is practising very hard. But because she is interested in it, she's not complaining and is really self-motivated. I wish she had the same zest with Maths!

I wonder if parents with kids in SOTA doing dance can tell me how they prepared their kids for the Talent Academy? I thought it was an audition so you go in, do your dance, and wait for the results to reach you a few weeks later.

Also, did any parent seek the help of the kid's ballet teacher to help choreograph for the Talent Academy...?

                        Thanks in advance!
