How to toilet train children

Dear all

My son will be 5years old in Dec. He can be toilet train to go \"wee wee\" in the afternoon nap but when it comes to night training...he does not want to get up. Oh my goodness!

I am having difficulties in getting him to go to \"wee\" without disturbing his sister(6years old) sleep (in the same room) and of course daddy's :x in the night. (next door)

He will scream and shout in the middle of the night should I force him to go toilet....saying he need to sleep.

[color=darkred]please give me some advice. I do understand that it will be better not to give him drinks 2hrs before he sleep and ask him to go toilet before he go sleep. [/color]

I usually give milk at 9pm cos dinner is at 6.30 or 7pm and fruits at 8pm then drag him out of bed at 11pm (that is when i tried nite toilet training) and hopefully before my hubby sleep.

But by 3 or 4am (that when most of us are at \"zombie\" state) the bed is wet and I have to change another mattress if he is not on diaper and should he be (cos i go no choice) and i drag him out off bed to do the \"routine\" he will scream and throw tantrum.

technically, your kid is only 4.5yo. at that age, i will carry my boy to the toilet to pass urine in the middle of the night. it may be tiring, but that is the only option if i do not want the hassle of a wet bed.

thanks for the info. maybe i was comparing him with my dau who manage to do it at the age of 3+.

So no choice...have to do a bit of weightlifting of a 17kg boy...

How about instead of carrying him or dragging him, get a plastic spittoon 痰盂 (the type that look like a top hat when inverted), let him pee into it and empty it into the toilet, spray some Jeypine/Dettol/Lysol disinfectant, rinse and you can save your shoulder/arm.

I would suggest that you hold the spittoon closer to his penis, so that you won't end up mopping the floor as well. Or alternatively get a bigger one.

I’m going to start to wean my girl off wearing diaper at night. She’s 5+, but always wakes up with a wet diaper even though she goes to the toilet before she sleeps (9pm) and her last drink of water is like 1.5hrs before sleeping.

Is there such a thing as a waterproof mattress cover? Which I can put over her mattress so that any accidents will not be absorbed into the mattress? I don’t mean the normal mattress protector which is also absorbant, like the mattress.

Appreciate some advice, tks !

I bought two kinds before.
1. Plastic mat (can buy from most stores that sell baby stuff): This one is totally waterproof so you just need to lay it on her bed and wipe/wash clean after use. However, my DD didn't like this as she sweats a lot during sleeping and the mat is not breathable, even though I put the mat under her mattress cover to protect the mattress.
2. Cloth mat with rubber/plastic backing which prevents slipping too (I found this at MothersWork some years ago): This was more acceptable since it has a fabric-lined surface with a waterproof backing. I bought two and I would machine wash them, then spin dry for convenience. Over time, the rubber backing will slowly peel off and the fabric will become fuzzy and attract lint. However, by that time, my DD had stopped wetting the bed.

Note: My DD is now 7 so I sure hope there are better and more of such products on the market now.

My boy starting toilet training at 18mths by CC. CC teachers said that he could express himself, so they wanted to give it a try. But he always ‘accident’ cos too engrossed in playing or watching TV. End up we decided to wait till he’s older.


When he was around 26mths we decided to try again. This time it was successful. There were only 4 accidents & it was because mummy was too engrossed in her TV show & did not hear him say "mummy, I want go toilet". OOPS! BAD MUMMY!

Now he’s off diapers during the day (even during nap time) & only wears diapers when we go out for long hours or go to places where toilets are far away & at night. So far we’ve tried no diapers for some nights, he’s able to hold & will wake up to pee (but we had to remind him before he sleep that he’s not wearing pampers & must wake up to pee).

Talking about toilet training reminded me of an incident last week.
Me: Baby, do you want to go toilet (me & my maid wanted to go toilet at shopping centre) or stay with daddy?
Baby: No mummy, I don’t want go toilet. I ‘shh shh’ in my pampers! Oh my pampers is so wet!

Me, my hb & my maid were laughing like mad when he said that.
