I think the kids are more able than the parents thought so.

If you tell them this is for phonics and that tis HYPY for Chinese, they will know how to differentiate, often times better than the adults.

As to whether to teach hanzhi first or HYPY or vice versa, it should be starting with the basic hanzhi components (parts) TOGETHER with the right HYPY, and build up from there.

eg before you teach 咬,扣,吃,喝, etc you got to teach 口 first and its meaning…and when you introduce other words with 口component, it will be much easier to remember - both how to write and how to pronounce the words. the kids normally can remember better than the adults…that should be the approach…BUT if the adults are already more blurr than the kids to start with, then it may be the blind leading the blind unless you get the right helps to begin with - in which case the adults and kids can learn together… that way the kids will not be afraid to try

For mine, I taught him to recognise basic hanzhi before sending him for HYPY course.

I believe in this approach as well, but sadly MOE think otherwise.
They learn HYPY before recognising the han zi.

Honestly I don't understand MOE's rationale.. now that DS' phonics is acceptable, I am starting on HYPY. He learnt in k2, but i find his foundations still weak, so I am revising with him. I agree with E3, that teaching the 上上音词语 is really difficult.. I much rather he learns to read the actual characters... oh well..I am finally seeking external help. :stupid: before its too late

I was told by my P4 boy that the CL teacher made them do the P5 exercises in the Da Zi Pao. I was like :? Trying to push or demoralise the pupils?

I also find the weekly moxie getting ridiculous.
I want to ask the same question when I undesigned look at son's Da Mu Zhi this morning. He got almost 70% wrong. What 's the purposes? :?

Same here. My dd2 is learning solely 汉字, I'll let her pick up 汉语拼音 next year at K2. This seems to work for dd1 last time, the only tricky part for 汉语拼音 was to remember the 上上音词语 with both chars at third sounds, for e.g 老虎, 蚂蚁, 雨伞 etc. The child has to remember to indicate the third sound for the first char although it's read as the second sound (阳平). I compiled a list of such 词语 for my dd to run thru while waiting for her schoolbus when she was P1, I purposely asked her to read in 上上音. The funnier it sounds to her, the better she remembers them.[/quote]Yea .. My dw prepare such a list too.

These days, before starting P1, a child shld hv a strong foundation in HYPY before starting P1. Reason being there are so many kiasu parents who sent their children for such HYPY during presch years. The pri sch teachers teach so quickly as they assume the class already know. If a child needs special assistance due to medical reasons, it can be an uphill to only start learning HYPY in P1.

But HYPY is not as difficult as it seems. Get a competent tutor to assist the child. This is only Feb now. More impt to learn HYPY well to prepare for the end of year exam. Nevermind the mid year results.

The CL tuition centre my P4 boy is attending has such HYPY classes. The class size is small too, very suitable for weaker children. PM me if you need the contact.

Thanks E3, this is new to me. The only HYPY rule I know so far is the 轻声 (hope I wrote this one correctly, cannot everytime tio suan 👅 ). DS taught me this when I questioned him why he forgot to add the 'sound' on top of the hanzi recently.
