      Jennifer:

I was told by my P4 boy that the CL teacher made them do the P5 exercises in the Da Zi Pao. I was like :? Trying to push or demoralise the pupils?

I also find the weekly moxie getting ridiculous.

I want to ask the same question when I undesigned look at son's Da Mu Zhi this morning. He got almost 70% wrong. What 's the purposes? :?

Mine only did the P4. Her CL tr did not ask them to attempt P5 section. I find it meaningless if they are not being taught before they attempt such questions.

As for HYPY, I started mine at K2 too. Before that only, hanzi. Taught her myself with the sheng mu first. We recited the b,p,m,f..... during and after bath. Then once she mastered them, we match each sheng mu varying yun mu and make the yin-yang-shang-qu 4 sounds. The shang shang yin ci yu, I made it a rule for her, but I did not draw out a list of them. If she sees 2 shang(3rd) sound, she knows the 1st will go ying (2nd). Plus, of course, the 4 rules to know which yun mu to place the sound and when to omit the 2 dots on 'u' etc. For HYPY, I prefer to teach her by blending each sheng mu and yun mu. School is teaching them by recognising the whole HYPY. I find blending helps to make out the sound when she encounters one she seldom use.

Can't help on the timetable but for Int 8, ds told me that CL spelling is on an adhoc basis.

CL teacher will inform in advance if there is one. For Int 8, there is no pre-defined CL spelling list like in eng. Should be the same for Int 10 rite?
Thank you, markfch. Like XYZ1, my ds said there was no CL spelling so far, be it HYPY or Hanzhi.

Aiyo, very lost ever since ds goes P1. Reading recent posts here makes me feel even more seven up eight down! You have even started your ds with Science!

You are right! da mu zhi only has works for P5/6. I heard from her that she did only P4 work, but never (bother to) hear 2nd part of her sentence. My girl did the P4 from her last year zhishihuabao, the P4 CL/higher CL section.

My son’s 听写 is from his P5 CL textbook…默写 is from his 知识报…no longer 听写/默写 list like last year. Parents do file up if you still have those lists with the 默写句子.

                markfch,
My daughter’s 听写 is tested on hanyu pinyin as well as han zi…she hates it. Headache teaching her every week.
She prefers to learn the 汉字 for eg 八,七,妈,爸 and write down the number corresponding with what the teacher tells the class.

Talking about CL spelling, ds just came back and told me there's spelling on Mon on pg 48 of chinese text. He said: \"Teacher didn't say whether it's hanzi or HYPY, so just test me both.\" Typical bochap ans, I'm getting used to it already. Anyone can confirm this?

For science exposure, it's all purely non-academic stuff (play play only, nothing serious). I'm pretty sure your ds will enjoy reading Young Scientist too. After all, it's comics 😄 .

DS just shrugs his shoulders and get on with it. He was very lucky to have a PRC chinese teacher in kindy who drilled him on chinese spelling since K1. You know, when a teacher is responsible, all the students under her will benefit greatly. So by now, he sort of accepted this as part of sch life.

                    Taught her myself

                    wow, u very hardworking.

The 1st thing I told my boys when I found out that kindy teacher wld be teaching HYPY was I was not properly trained in HYPY. Imagine our time a class of 40 pupils, CL teacher bpmf at us, we kids bpmf back at her. She did not check who was not doing it right (that's me). So they better pay 100% attention to learn from their kindy teachers and come back home to teach me.

I find this strategy very useful. They wise up when they know I am not dependable 😉

Take for example the weekly moxie. I am fast losing stamina to go through the learning with my P4 boy. I did the 1st two with him and let him learn by himself the last one. Am slowly detaching the strings and building up his confidence level.

                      Hi markfch
My son said need to recognise the chinese characters only. I think if it's tingxie, and they suppose to recognise the words, they should be expected to write the hanyu pinyin right? can't be just asking them to read out. So your son is prob right, still need to learn both.

Thanks for the reply, masshiro . Actually my ds didn't say teacher instructed them to learn both.

DS said he doesn't know what teacher instructed, so he'll just go ahead to learn both  .

Maybe can wait for Mrsbongz to double confirm. Otherwise I'll just let him learn both as a 'punishment' for not paying attention in class.
