Hi markfch
Talking about CL spelling, ds just came back and told me there's spelling on Mon on pg 48 of chinese text. He said: \"Teacher didn't say whether it's hanzi or HYPY, so just test me both.\" Typical bochap ans, I'm getting used to it already. Anyone can confirm this?notabox:
Thank you, markfch. Like XYZ1, my ds said there was no CL spelling so far, be it HYPY or Hanzhi.
Aiyo, very lost ever since ds goes P1. Reading recent posts here makes me feel even more seven up eight down! You have even started your ds with Science!
For science exposure, it's all purely non-academic stuff (play play only, nothing serious). I'm pretty sure your ds will enjoy reading Young Scientist too. After all, it's comics

DS just shrugs his shoulders and get on with it. He was very lucky to have a PRC chinese teacher in kindy who drilled him on chinese spelling since K1. You know, when a teacher is responsible, all the students under her will benefit greatly. So by now, he sort of accepted this as part of sch life.markfch,
My daughter's ε¬ε is tested on hanyu pinyin as well as han zi...she hates it. Headache teaching her every week.
She prefers to learn the ζ±ε for eg ε «οΌδΈοΌε¦οΌηΈ and write down the number corresponding with what the teacher tells the class
My son said need to recognise the chinese characters only. I think if it's tingxie, and they suppose to recognise the words, they should be expected to write the hanyu pinyin right? can't be just asking them to read out. So your son is prob right, still need to learn both. -
masshiro:
Thanks for the reply, masshiro . Actually my ds didn't say teacher instructed them to learn both.

DS said he doesn't know what teacher instructed, so he'll just go ahead to learn both  .
Maybe can wait for Mrsbongz to double confirm. Otherwise I'll just let him learn both as a 'punishment' for not paying attention in class. -

I also find the weekly moxie getting ridiculous.
Ya I'm beginning to find it getting tougher each week.. and mind you, she's just in Pri 3. I wonder how she, or rather, how I am going to cope teaching her when she gets to upper Primary... Most likely the responsibility will be fully shifted to DH by then.

Mrsbongz/markfch,
Do your boys have ε¬ε for both hanyu pinyin as well as ζ±ε ? -
Jennifer:
Thanks, Jennifer! Actually if you know my background..you would not have said tat. I was already quite laxed with her then.
wow, u very hardworking.
The 1st thing I told my boys when I found out that kindy teacher wld be teaching HYPY was I was not properly trained in HYPY. Imagine our time a class of 40 pupils, CL teacher bpmf at us, we kids bpmf back at her. She did not check who was not doing it right (that's me). So they better pay 100% attention to learn from their kindy teachers and come back home to teach me.
I find this strategy very useful. They wise up when they know I am not dependable
Take for example the weekly moxie. I am fast losing stamina to go through the learning with my P4 boy. I did the 1st two with him and let him learn by himself the last one. Am slowly detaching the strings and building up his confidence level.
Currently, both she and I do not have much time to revise. I just target and go through selected parts of her texts and some assessment works like compre and compo. The rest, she is much on her own. I know moxie is getting tougher, if we can afford time, I will go through moxie to clarify some idioms/challenging words and their contexts. She checks dictionary, memories and practises writing out by her own. So far so good. When I let go, I know marks will slip, but eventually, once the skills of handling it is mastered, it will come back.
You are right to slowly detach, to build his independence as well as building his confidence. Well, as parents, even though many of us will like, but at some point of time, we have to let go.
I even told her, \"I will not care more for her stuff than she will for herself.\" She did become more responsible as she knows her mommy wll not act as her timely alarm clock.
