what i want is not to have to pay the maid’s loan and then deduct it from her salary for 11 months.

Actually we get back the levy from tax relief everyyear when we file our income tax, right? I remember I file for maid levy relief $4000 every year because I m the one paying for the levy. I m very sure. My husband cannot claim for this relief because he is not paying for the levy.

Employers who need maids are really at the mercy of these foreign workers now. Just reading Sunday’s papers made my blood boil. Are these Filipino maids here to enjoy life ? Expat families, No babies/pets, no old people, min $450, Sundays/public holidays off :x :x

Someone in ST forum mentioned these maids earn like $60 back in their home country…then why are they given the luxury to choose employers here ? Prefer expat families bcos Singapore families don’t give them freedom.

Aiyah , if she can get expat to hire her at age 47 , then congrats to her lor. Is just like ourselves, when we looking for jobs , most of us also looking for MNC as MNC is perceived as better employers. So in this case expat is perceived as better employers. Problem is how many expats are there in spore ?

Actually I understand now that 36% of our population are foreigners. So I think the expat group should be more now. Thanks to the government, we may only have 50% Singaporean left soon. Elections better come quick and I hope my estate don’t have a walkover!!! Of course this is speaking for myself only.

50% singaporean left does not mean less number of singaporeans. it is still more than 3 million, any time more than before

and that 36% being foreigners are mostly blue collar workers under work permit as well as 196k of FDW.

Just curious, what is the starting pay for new maid now from philippine, myamma or Indian? Has it also gone up significally?

I totally agree wz converting levy to maid’s salary. I rather pay my maid higher salary than paying the levy.

That I totally agree. Since I have to pay levy, might as well pay the maid instead of govt. What's the point of paying govt for not doing anything ?
Hopefully can transfer the levy amt to maid and hope they give more quality.

I have this article in my blog.
                      http://singaporemaid.blogspot.com/2011/02/maids-getting-to-choose-their-bosses-14.html

Yes the maids are earning $60 back home. But if they have a choice, they will definitely go for employers who can afford to pay them more.

I don't mind paying more for a maid who is competent. A good maid really makes my life very easy, I can go home to a clean home, and concentrate on teaching my kids. That is priceless. But for maids who are not competent, paying $300 is too much.

Many expats also encountered bad maids before, the smart ones will know that many maids are not worth such a high salary.

I welcome the removal of the maid levy. But even if it is removed, there are still too many problems with employing maids in Singapore :

30% of maids sent home within 3 months of starting work (21 Mar 2010)
                      http://singaporemaid.blogspot.com/2010/03/30-of-maids-sent-home-within-3-months.html

Are errant maids, agencies misusing free ride home?
                      http://singaporemaid.blogspot.com/2009/11/are-errant-maids-agencies-misusing-free.html

                      More maids leaving employers
                      http://singaporemaid.blogspot.com/2010/02/more-maids-leaving-employers-28-feb.html

Basically there are many bad maids being transferred from one employer to another, and they have nothing to lose because employers are the ones paying the maid loan. When we employ maids, there is no way for us to find out what they have done in their ex-employer's house. I wonder why the authorities cannot understand that employers are facing all these problems.

I totally agree ! I heard that in HK and Taiwan, maids must pay their loan in full before going there. It is so ridiculous that employers in Singapore have to pay the loan. Then if the maid does not like an employer, she can simply asked to leave. The new employer must pay for the balance of her maid loan. How can the maid be motivated to work hard ?

I also heard that in Taiwan, if a maid has been sent back by the employer, there is no way she can find work in Taiwan again. This ensures that bad maids are not being transferred to other employers, and also ensures that maids are motivated to work hard. If the same rule applies in Singapore, then I don't mind paying a high salary for maids, provided that I am guaranteed to get a good maid.
