Need comment on paying for CCA

i think still have schools that way. eg. my boy in sec 2. Has not had to pay for anything, unlike in pri school. Their performing attire generally quite easy, so they just buy their own shirts/pants.My gal is currently in P1 and we paid $165 for her CCA in S&D.
Don't recall myself, during sch days have to pay for anything other than uniforms/shoes for uniform groups. -
On a side note - I would like to hear from middle income family whom are not eligible for the subsidy and yet need to pay for the costume, excursion etc. Would you do it for all for the glory of the school?

I doubt that middle income families pay these for \"the glory of the school\". There is benefit for their kids to be part of the school's programme. Edusave can pay a part, but there will be some families that will exercise their option to not pay for these extra-curricula items.
For example, most if not all schools, have an overseas excursion that is co-paid with the kids' Edusave fund, some school subsidies and from the parents themselves. However, these excursions are optional, so families have to decide whether the amount they eventually have to pay is worth their child's experience.
As for CCA, I suppose paying for coaches, or uniforms, or trips are also seen as investments - if their children have a talent that can be used for DSA, such return on investments would be worth it; and not necessarily for \"the glory of the school\".

Do you know how these excursion payments work? MOE funds some and some from edusave and balance from cash, is it? Bc my kids have gone before, and i think usually there is at least 50% subsidy or something.

I don't mind paying if it's an enrichment that I would like her to take up anyway eg. Maths Olympiad training and it's definitely much cheaper to co-pay in school than to go externally for the same course
Can't say the same for orchestra though. Theory taught was a mess. Fingering taught was a mess. Withdrawn my dd from CCA and engage a private teacher instead. So I guess I can't be a cheapo afterall

The overseas excursions depend very much on the tour operator and how the individual schools fund it. It may be subsidised or it may not be. The schools might have a special fund for it, or it might be funded by a rich alumni or the students might have to raise funds through special projects for the subsidy. There is no hard and fast rule.

I am actually surprised to learn that some schools charge parents for CCA.
I am not refering to enrichment programs that are conducted by external parties. But I am refering to school CCAs eg. orchestral, badminton, etcβ¦
I first heard about it from a relative recently, whose kidsβ school charges P1 and P2 for CCA as itβs not compulsory.
In our case, for P1 and P2, though CCA are not compulsory, it comes at no extra cost for the kids to join.
Meanwhile for overseas immersion, my P4 is joining a immersion trip to Nanjing. Total cost is around $1.5K. $200 from edusave and the rest, out of own pocket. -

When my p5 son went to beijing, we paid S$700, and for my daughter's trips to Europe, it was around S$1.8k to S$2k, so I assume it was 50%. I somehow think there is some provision for overseas trips subsidy IF singaporean. Bc my son's non-singaporean classmates pay more.

Ya, agree with it was something we want her to take up, so we just paid. But then, every CCA in her school cost at least $165 and above.. Tsk tsk. Is that a norm in pri schs?autumn82:

Even for her PE lessons, the sch brought external vendors in, so no choice have to pay another $220.
I don't wanna think abt the overseas immersion in her later years... -

I think the non-Sg kids pay more because they don't have an Edusave fund to tap into.
