True. I asked DD to deliver books to my sis hotel in chengdu last year. The courier co got the books but didn't do anything. Ended up I had to wait until that courier return the books to DD then I could get my refund. It was very aggravating, but the refund took 8 days once the books were verified. -

You can bring whatever you want to the exam if you think the desk is large enough. HAHA. Can bring any number of calculators or dictionaries, as long as they are in the approved list. I usually let them bring 2 calculators or 2 dictionaries each. Just in case of failure for any reason. And it makes sense if you have more than 1 child anyway.

Personally I will stick with the book. What if the electronic dictionary becomes faulty halfway through the exam ?

Actually, i found it very useful as a parent as well as a person of chinese origin. The values and the concepts are actually foundations of the chinese culture. The CD plays the words but also provides explanation. So convenient!!! :lol:
There is a useful translation at the following site. Between the chinese explanation and the english translation, its very easy to understand. And you don't have to do it all at once. Right now, what I learn, I \"transfer\" to my kid 24 hours later. Must absorb, digest and then transfer in kids language mah...

Should be legal lah... The discs were on the front seat but the customs also just wave me along. The packaging is just a plastic cover. But i think its quite famous. When the salesgirl play it for me (must test mah), all the kids magically crowd around and can recite! :shock: -

Yes I am using the Sage books on my #2, i find the books usedul, at least I know she has learnt some new words! I think she can recog the words, just that some words she \"guess\" by the sentence and got them right. I'll continue with this coz I believe its better than doing nothing. Btw if I get the 45kuaidu, do i need to use both Sage and the 45KD? Thanks
Are you using the Sage Basic Chinese 500 books ? These books repeat the same words in different sentences throughout the series, and every page has different pages. You will know whether he remembers the word or is he reading from memory by looking at the pictures.tamarind:
oops he always repeat the same books. Cos i dont have many \"low\" level books for him (#3), basically he cant read much.Also, try not to let him read the same books over and over again, keep reading new books, so that it is less likely for him to remember the sentences related to the pictures.

It is fine to read to her, if you can make sure that she is looking at every word, and she can remember new words that you have read to her before.
I think I am trying to \"impose\" what their sister has done for the past yrs and currently. Very little effort has been put on her, yet the returns are big, so I am hoping to do the same for the younger ones, but I think no 1 method will suit all children, hence I have to do it differently for the younger ones. -

Actually I thought the dangdang direct shipping fees are reasonable, even including the shipping fees, the books are still 40%-50% cheaper than prices in Singapore. -

That makes no sense as a new delivery should take 8 weeks. I would suggest you ask for a full refund and make a new order.daddybear:

my order was shipped out in early Dec but til date, still no news. DD said needs 3mths to trace my parcel.

Me too taught my #1 to use dictionary coz I find it a hassle she kept asking me how to read/write. Its very useful to learn, she can then write compo or do homework without disturbing me hehe. she uses both HYPY (for words she cant write) and éæ (to look up words she cant read). Most of time i dont read for her, coz I want her to practice how to use éæ check the dictionary

Most of the time, she use the dictionary to find difficult words that she can read, but not too sure how to write it, so she use hanyu pinyin to locate the word. When she turns to the page, she can find the correct word. This is what MOE expects students to do when writing compositions, not to look up on how to read words.
For words that she cannot read, it is necessary to check by éæ. But when I read with her, I don't make her check the dictionary for every word that she does not know how to read, I just teach her. -

Either that, or use the online one nciku.com . But iphone one is more convenient.

Actually, with such long waiting time for DD to be delivered, won't it be better to get the books from brick and mortar store? Be a member and you get 20% off? I thought it's better than having to wait for fe mths and maybe the books won't reach at all.

The dangdang books are not available in Popular bookshop, except some titles by æĻįšĒæĻą, the author of įŽįŦæĨčŪ°.
You can find some of the books in a bookshop at Bras Basah level 3, but the prices are about 2 to 3 times more. Even then the selection is not very good.
I have bought a few hundred books from dangdang, so the savings are very substantial. I don't mind waiting for 4 to 8 weeks for the books.
The problem is that local bookshops have a very bad selection of Chinese books. If parents depend on them, your kids will never be good in Chinese.
Another alternative is to borrow from the National Library. But the popular books are always on loan, you need to pay $1.55 to reserve for the book, and the condition of the books may be very bad.
So far I pay about $3.00 to $4.00 per book from dangdang.com, inclusive of shipping. I would rather buy new books then resell them after my kids have finished reading.
