Q&A - PSLE Math

Yeah, it's a fraction question! My kid is in P6.Hi
I took another look at your question, interestingly; it’s a fraction question.
My solutions are based on speed concepts as the earlier question is from the topic on speed.
Your kid would be able to understand better if he had covered the speed topic in school.
Just curious, is your kid in P5 or P6?
Have another look at the highlighted number, I think there is an error.
Best wishes
Yup, the error corrected should be 3/4 instead of 1/3. -

I think this question is from Nanyang P6 SA2 2008.
It’s interesting to see that your son’s school classifies it under fraction instead of speed.
Yes, I think a student can still solve it before learning the topic of speed.

Hi
Hello Tianzhu,
Interesting question.
I did it the Guess and Check method and got the answer after 10 guesses!!! Doubt students sitting in PSLE would have the luxury of time to do 10 guesses.
My answer is 343 apples and 657 oranges; but I'm curious and eager to learn your method.
By the way, can I presume the calculator can be used for such a question?
Thank you for posting such challenging questions. It helps me know what my daughter can expect for her exams.
According to the student who posted this question, it’s Q18 from paper 2.The last question of paper 2; so, it is supposed to be a killer type of questions.
Hence, calculator can be used.
You've given the right answers.
Yes, GC can be used, but it’s time consuming.
Is your daughter in P6 in a local school?

My daughter is in P5, in a local school. Already, I can see that the questions are increasing in the level of difficulty. So far, my daughter is very motivated and sees every challenging question as something new to learn.

The reason why I asked my earlier question is because your username suggests that you’re not a local. It’s good to know that your child is motivated to learn.
The good news is she still has plenty of time before PSLE 2012.
Please curb your curiosity for a little longer. I am withholding my solution because I hoped to see more alternatives, especially solutions from students of Pei Hwa.

IMHO, this is a straightforward question if the student knows his/her simultaneous equations well...
4/7 * A + 11/9 * O = 999 ----> 36 x A + 77 x O = 63 x 999 ------(1)
A + O = 1000------------------> 77x A + 77x O = 77 x 1000 ------(2)
From the two equations,
41 A = 77000 - 63 x 999 ----> A = 343
O = 1000 - 343 = 657 -
