Heard from my gal that her teacher said that it's good to attend the abacus class cos it helps them to calculate faster.

Any of your kid attending remedial classes? My gal starts today for her remedial class. Sigh...
I am signing up this for my son. Apparently, this is the first time the school is offering this class.

Although my DD will miss the first two lessons, I will still sign up. Have check with her form teacher, there will not be any make up lesson . Hope she will be able to catch up. Hope she will be able gain some knowledge from these lessons. Actually, I was quite glad that the school is making an effort to organize this for the P1 students.

For the abacus class enrichment class (conducted by The Enrichment Hub), is it complusary? Thought of opting out.

It is not compulsory. I opt out for my boy already.

Abacus is not necessary for doing well in maths. Even if a child can do additions/subtractions/multiplication very fast, it does not mean that he will be very good in maths.

Take a look at this example in their maths worksheet :

Doing very well in maths requires that the child understands English very well !

Totally agreed that English also plays a very important part in doing well in math. One must be able to understand the question well in order to solve it. Let your child exposes to different type of questions. Practice make perfect. Hard work also plays a very important part in doing well in a subject.

I have also opted out from the abacus class. Because DS hates it (he attended the abacus class last year for a few months), and also DH and I find that it does not really help. Some of the methods do not fit into the mainstream teaching in school (e.g the addition of 2 pairs of tens and ones), which could cause confusion to the child.

Also, agree that understanding the English language is an important factor to answering Maths questions, as a lot of the Maths questions are not very straight forward type.

Sigh... now I wonder if I shd shoot to the principal directly abt P1 having to attend remedial class. 😞

My gal cried again on Sun, thinking that she got to be alone during lunch break after remedial class. In the end, I got to take urgent leave to accompany her. Sigh...

                    Hi to everyone & ChiefKiasu,

I was informed to attend PV interview on this coming friday. I have heard that for the past years, West Grove did not set control on the number of intake for their PV, which resulted in balloting for <1KM in Phase 2B. Any news whether they will restrict the number of intakes this year?

Can you share with me what criteria are the schools looking at for selecting a PV? I need to know to increase my chances to be selected 😉
