      (x+y) + (x-y) = 500+300

      2x = 800
      x = 400

      If x = 400, y = 100

      umm… dunno how to explain to kid though.

        P3 Maths question.

        x + y = 500
        x - y = 300

        Find x and y.

        How do you explain the whole process of solving this to your P3 dd?

        just add the two equations :

        2x = 800

        x = 400

        y = 100

        before they learn model method (even before algebra), they learn to add or subtract the equations

        I have tried this method but she still blur...... :?

          P1 concept = 3=2=5 , 4+1=5

          P3 = possibility of x+y=500
          i.e 300+200=500 or 400+100=500
          x-y=300 so, 400-100=300
          so x=400, y-100

            Yes, explaining it to a P3 and make sure she understands is a great challenge.

                x + y = 500
                x - y = 300
                ------------------
                2x = 800
                ==========

                x = 400

                    One of my friends checked with MOE. The answer is algbera method is allowed in exam.

                    But it's too difficult for P3 students to understand the concept.
