before they learn model method (even before algebra), they learn to add or subtract the equations -
P1 concept = 3=2=5 , 4+1=5
P3 = possibility of x+y=500
i.e 300+200=500 or 400+100=500
x-y=300 so, 400-100=300
so x=400, y-100 -

P3 = possibility of x+y=500
i.e 300+200=500 or 400+100=500
x-y=300 so, 400-100=300
so x=400, y=100
