I have some question about HCL in PSLE. If I am not wrong, students with HCL will take another paper beside the normal CL paper and if they score additional merit in HCL paper, they will be awarded 1-3 points bonus in their aggregate when applying to SAP schools. Correct me if my picture is wrong.

Point 2: If the merit is earned through taking a tougher paper, I think it is very unfair that the merit is only counted when he/she is applying for SAP schools. This creates an unnecessary confusion when we look at a school COP for example.
Totally agreed with you that the bonus points for HCL is causing alot of confusion on the COP. However, besides the additional bonus points when applying for SAP schools, there are some other advantages of HCL. If you pass HCL at PSLE, you would be allowed to continue with HCL at secondary school level and you pass HCL at O Level, you would not need to take Chinese Lang at JC level. Also, a HCL pass at O level is worth 2 bonus points (you can dock off 2 points from your L1R5 aggregate) for entry to JC. Generally, for those who do not do HCL in primary school, they are not allowed to do HCL at secondary school level unless they meet certain criteria set by MOE. Even if they meet the criteria and do HCL at secondary school level, most of them would struggle as compared to those who had done HCL in primary school.

I agree with you with the other perk of taking HCL. However, my point isn't to dispute that. My point is that since students are allowed to continue their HCL studies even in non SAP schools, why is bonus only counted when one applies to SAP schools? And then, the inconsistency is that an A1 in O level is given 2 bonus points when going to JC regradless of whether one is continuing chinese studies in the A level.

it is interesting to note that for those sec schools with COP below 200, quite a number of them have some very high score!

cant' see the image ... can post a larger one? thanks

I totally agreed with your views. HMT is certainly very tough - it is like learning 2 first languages and the bonus points should be applied across the board.

DVL, when I mention dsa using sports, I also included non-academic talents like dance, music etc. If a student is strong academically, she wouldn’t need to use non-academic talents to gain entry to a gd sch. For parents of bright kids who wanted ‘insurance’ to a gd sch as you mentioned, then they are just very kiasu. If COP of a gd sch is 260 and parents feel that their kids are in the 255+ range, then they should apply thru DSA, using academic , to try to secure a place in that sch. If students are always producing A* in all their subjects, then there is really no need to try dsa. Of cos, some feel less stressed during psle when they got a sch thru dsa.

Wow. Mr. verykiasu2010, you're really very observant. We can see the high score of 270, 262, 260 etc from the list.

These probably are the smart students who are lazy to travel and just attend neighbourhood school.

Honestly, for the smart students who study on their own and do not depend on teachers, any school does not matter.

Still remember only when Primary and Secondary where attendance for lesson is compulsory (mark attendance by teacher) but JC or Poly or U, skipping lecture is very common especially when one feel that the lecturer is talking no so useful stuff. Exam are mostly self studied.

But there is a difference attending a neighbourhood and popular schools, is the type of students there and the kind of network you have build at school days which will become helpful when comes to working and business.
