IJJ:
Happy Mama:
I will be happier if she proves to be independent and diligent. There are other aspects of importance in life than just score alone. πŸ˜‰

IJJ, I am trying to learn to let go, just like you, coz ultimately she has to learn to be independent and diligent without being pushed... but somehow DD doesn't seem to be able to stick to schedules, without me nagging at her.

Do you have any tips to share? πŸ˜„

First, I must say, I am fortunate that she is obliging and always eager to learn. She is also blessed abundantly with 'onz' teachers.

Besides, these are the points I took to her :
1. Consistent work
Since young, I make it a point to emphasize that consistent work is more important than last min rush. Foundation i.e. understanding of concepts must be laid strong. She revises regularly/weekly for the topics covered. Come exam, the works will not be too bulky to manage. She has learnt that there is no shortcut to scoring. The only way is to read and practise, consistently.
2. Encourage
This girl of mine took to words of appreciation well. Her language of love. πŸ˜‰ I praise her with advises to spur her on. There is always rooms for improvement.
3. Rewards
Since she is a bookworm, I reward her with trips to library and of course, her very much-desired books.
4. Firm and clear instructions
Instructions that she is 100% clear.
5. Set my expectations
I have expectations for her. Of course, it got to be challenging enough to spur her on, yet within reasonable limit. I ensure that she knows my expectations.
6. Balance
Last but not least, balanced between leisure and work. Family and school. So, she will not be overworked or overplayed.

I like the \"5 languages of love' theory alot. I use this theory to understand my respective child's language. This works effectively. Yes, I want to show my love yet I have to be careful that this 'love' will not be too burdened on her shoulders. She knows what I am doing is for her good. She may not entirely understand why, but she trusts my intentions.

As our children grow, it is also important to give them space (with trust). I explain to her (time to time) that I would like to give her more space and trust my judgement that she has the abilities to be more independent now. She works to prove me right. Steps by steps. Sometimes, baby steps.
IJJ, your style is pretty much the same as mine, :hugs:, though I need to improve on the love language part! πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰

Happy Mama:
She says he corrected her artwork and told her where and how she could improve it.

I did not see the \"corrected\" works by him until the last piece. I guess he decided to exhibit his skills for the last homework. He went thru each child's work individually. We shall see how it goes for the future art lessons.

My dd didn't particularly like him or dislike him. She thinks as long as she does her artwork (and she enjoys doing them), she has done her part.

IJJ mentioned about consistency and not last min rush which I fully agree.

I am pretty upset with teacher's last minute rush this week. It's only left with a few more days to CA1, yet they were assigned more than 10 pages of Math homework from their activity books and MPAH for the past two days. They just started doing Chap 2 for MPAH yesterday. Teacher told the class she will be assigning more homework this week. Is this the meaning of \"onz\"?

FT was absent for almost a week some time back yet the relief teacher didn't assign any homework that week. Although I made full use of the time to revise then, there is never enough.

It's already almost end of the week. Math activity books questions are too simple to ensure good grades for exams, yet she had to do them this week, which left us little time for revision. At first I thought I was the only one thinking that so much time was wasted on rushing the homework, but I received an sms from another parent from the same class telling me so too. I guess for a good class, they should simply get the Math activity book questions out of the way asap so that they will be time for other higher-order or challenging revision. I guess dd's last year's FT has risen my expectations.

I have decided to take things into my own hands now. My dd has been very coorperative since she knew that next week is going to be a big week for her. I just hope she can sustain till it's over. Her effort put in is already good enough for me, we shall leave the results from her efforts of labour to God. πŸ™

Hi Funx3,

Supplementary lessons should not have continued this week for P5…trying to breathe normally and go easy on myself. This week should be NO homework to allow kids to revise. Maths teacher told class to do 10 problem sums from activity book but parents to mark as she has no time. I told son to do what he can as I need his attention for Science last night.

As I walked him to school just now, he told me whole class flunked Eng mock paper. Teacher told them vocab, synthesis & comprehension OE pulled them down. I’ll just do what I can these few days.

Maybe he heard about the feedback about him through KSP (since many teachers and even P reads this thread) and realised he has to pay more attention to the kids, hence decided to change his approach. πŸ˜‰

You are not alone and I can totally understand your frustrations...

DD has pages and pages of homework to do, and sometimes she will be doing homework till midnight, and with only 6 hours of sleep, the cycle continues the next day.

Yesterday DD proudly announced that her class has started learning about Plants. :slapshead: My reply \"Oh, great. Finally...\" Thank goodness, I have already coached her on Plants, so I didn't quite bother when she started on the topics in school. Can you imagine kids who didn't have much coaching or enrichment, they would have a hard time catching up with the syllabus especially when about 30-40% of the CA1 questions would be on Plants.

I guess teachers these days really do not have much time to complete their syllabus. πŸ˜‰

Agreed. IJJ, My Gal, just like your dd, Does ALL her Revision Plan herself, Very Little Interference from Mummy since Young. Only Seek Help when Got Problems.

You all are so lucky.

Mine (thank goodness) is very independent when it comes to homework. She will automatically do all her homework on her own and only consults me when in doubt... and I do not check her homework at all.

BUT when homework is done, that's where she tends to slack by playing or watching tv, only recently, she's starting to love reading... I've got to nag at her to do her assessments and after doing 1 or 2 pages, she says she's tired and wants a break.

I wonder what I should do to make her sit still for at least 1 hour to concentrate on her studies.

That's the difference between girls and some boys who are mature.
My daughter in P1 will automatically take out her work while son is still playing.
For my son, I've hands-off his homework since P4...if he doesn't get them done, he is the one facing teacher. If there are mistakes, his teacher will know and correct him.

My Gal Told Me Her EL T Was Really Angry with the Whole Class for Getting Bet 50+ to 70+ for the Mock Paper Last Week.

Always Optimistic, She Told Me, \" I Compare My Marks With the Classmate Sitting In Front, Behind, On My Left and On My Right ....
And .... I Got Higher Marks than ALL of Them! So I Should Be Alright ....\"
Ha Ha ....
πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜‰

She's Fortunate (Or Unfortunate?) that These Kids R Scoring 50+ range .... (She's Always Getting an In-Bet' Kind of Score .... Yeah She's in the 60+ Range!)

Anyway T is Expecting 80+ to 90+ for the Class ....
In that Sense, I Guess the Whole Class Flunk in her Eyes!

Guess She'll Have More Work On Her Hand, since according to My Gal, their Class has Been a Pretty Happy-Go-Lucky since Way Back in P3 ....

My views too... Yes, she's ok in terms of homework.. the only thing that irritates me is her inability to be driven to study and do revision.
