Actually the kids do learn the chinese characters in K1 and K2... so when hanyu pinyin is introduced in k2, the kids are supposed to be able to identify the chinese characters with the right hanyu pinyin and vice versa. P1 textbooks have chinese characters, with the hanyu pinyin below the the chinese characters...
cool.... but I thought the Pri1 textbooks don't have chinese characters... how to expect the kids the know... or they have other supplementary notes?janet_lee88:
Yes, spelling is in hanyu pinyin but daughter's school also testing chinese characters although no need to write them but must know the what they sound like...her school rather ON. -

Yes, must know all the hanyu pinyin with the tones. The reason why they only start hanyu pinyin in K2 is because the kids might confuse it with the english phonics that they are picking up in N1/N2 and K1.
Cool... the kids need to write hanyu pinyin with the tone thingy too? A bit challenging to teach that to K2 kid... cos' my kid does it as phonics... and they only do 汉字 in K2... and chinese library books are 汉字 of cos.Callie Tan:
The spellings for Term 1 for my girl are all hanyu pinyin only. It's not only hanyu pinyin of 2 words, it can be hanyu pinyin for the whole sentence...
And I am not sure about how schools teach but I Strongly encourage parents to prepare the kids in K2 for this hanyu pinyin drilling session in P1. If not sure faint....
But if you look at the exercises my girl is doing in school, the kids are expected to be able to 认字. They have to be able to identify the hanyu pinyin with the right 汉字.
How come they don't teach hanyu pinyin in K1/K2 levels and yet expect the kids to know that in Pri 1?

Daddy D, may I know how old is your child? The norm is chinese characters are taught from N2 onwards and of course in K1 and K2. Hanyu pinyin will start only in K2. By P1, the kids should already have some general concepts and ideas about hanyu pinyin... -

My DD2 who is K2 this year and is having Chinese enrichment every Saturday. The teacher started to introduce hanyu pinyin in week 5, Term 1 :shock: I was like,:Huh, so fast?\" So when I checked with the teacher, she told me that learning hanyu pinyin is v challenging for a K2 kid especially when they just managed how to write Chinese Character words. So she is introducing them slowly so that the kids will not be scare off

P1 textbooks do have chinese characters...at the end of every chapter, there is a box which has the characters + hanyu pinyin which the child has to know...something called either 识认字.

My girl's K2 chinese teacher told me that. This is because it is a totally new concept and the kids will get mixed up between hanyu pinyin and phonics... and given the fact that hanyu pinyin is so important in P1 first semester, better kiasu a bit to start early.

PCF kindergarten branches differ from each other. my kiddo went to one of them. there they taught her as a supplementary class. like a p1 hypy prep.course. they have classes in RC also. -
We went to IMM. My legs carried me to Popular.
Picked up some books for son’s CL compo. There is this newly published book for Upper Primary 作文 which has 2 model answers…one is average while the other has 成语，好词好句 and some other creative phrases to spice it up. The other Chinese title is for P5/6 Oral preparation based on 2010 format.
Other than that, I didn’t get any other assessment book…really controlled myself just now…get what I need. -

You can check with the chinese teacher on when they will be introducing hanyu pinying to the kids....at least you have some ideas. I have heard of some kindergartens don't do hanyu pinying at all but I think it's very minority lah. In such cases then the parents may have to intervene

If I didn't remember wrongly, daughter had very tough ting xie in K2. The ting xie were in sentences and she had to learn to write every single character

Side track a little bit. I found this in my DS chinese textbook for P1 when revising with him. Can someone help me with this pinyin and help me with explanation:
碰 过 来, 碰 过 去.
The pinyin on the textbook it is written like this: peng4 guo lai, peng4 guo qu.
I told my son it might be printing error, in my opinion it is supposed to be: peng4 guo4 lai2, peng4 guo4 chi4.
But I asked my son to check with the teacher. The teacher said, what it printed on the book is the correct one, so it is: peng4 guo(neutral tone) lai (neutral tone), peng4 guo (neutral tone) chi (neutral tone).
Why? I really don't understand.... :?
