RI or HCI

Yes the number of top scorers make it appears to be so easy to get all A's. I teased my kids that questions nowadays must be easier. They got upset and started confronting me with their A level questions. I realised that these straight As students are really good. The overall standard has been raised so many folds compared to my time. Sometimes I really feel sad for the poor students. But then \"for the sake of their future\", I am still using this stupid line to my youngest one - \"If others can do it, so can you\" - although deep in my heart, I know it is easier said than done and as long as they have done their best, I am satisfied.
It is true it seems to be \"easier\" to get As as time passes. -

The questions that they have to answer are indeed easier. Even H3 modules nowaday are easier than the old days special papars. H3 modules are university freshman modules, they are new materials but the questions for the exams are usually straightforward. In contrast, special papers questions are usually more difficult and require some twisting in the thinking in order to solve them.
I was commenting to my colleague that kids nowadays seems to have to cope with more things like project works and research attachment and they seems to learn more stuffs. He replied that although they seem to learn more stuffs, it is in the expense of depth, and thus their problem solving skills are not as good as in the past. They do not know how to solve problems that they have not seen before. And this is refering to good students from top schools that have opportunity for research attachment with him. -

I am so sorry that I have no knowledge of special papers at all. They were after my time and before my kids time. So I guess I am wrong if we compare the current syllabus to the syllabus slightly earlier.

I definitely agree with the your friend's comment that \"They do not know how to solve problems that they have not seen before.\" I think this is the outcome of over emphasis on results and grades.
By the way, I wonder whether MOE has the raw scores just like PSLE. Otherwise how can they tell the difference when awarding scholarshipn - with so many people getting the same grades. -
Hi i am from RI, based on some of my worksheets, RI and RGS study the same stuff basically; pronounciation, English, Sec 3/4 stuff and self-learning. my hwa chong friends study easier stuff and can rely on the teacher more. In RI or RGS, you have to learn some things yourself, your primary school grade accounts for nothing. If you want to migrate/study in britain, RI will help a lot. If you dont know what I mean, pm me. I am a GEP non-sports dsa, my aggregate was 243, I was comfirmed into RI HCI and NUS, and put RI as my first choice. also, your academic achievements mean NOTHING if you plan to dsa RI unless it is extremely good (smops platinum, nmos gold , RI heymath distinction/merit etc.). If you have sports, they will give you priority, but GEP dont get in cos they’re dsa, but the interview matters a lot, body language and all, there will be three people interviewed with you, if you answer their question first it may help. Thats all I know.

I have two questions.
1) What about the people culture of RI vs HCI ?
Someone told me RI culture tend to be like cooperate standard and is more individualistic and and HCI more people-orientated. Hence, schools and students handle matters differently. Any comments?
2) If one 's P6 Higher chinese score is about 75 and is strong in Math and Science, how can he fit into HCI Chinese standard expectation, any comments ? -
mothertan:
1)I cannot comment about RI cos' I have no children there. For HCI, the classmates are competitive but also willing to teach and share with one another. The school encourages the \"gentlemen\" to voice their opinions and are open to all kinds of \"appeals\" by the students. As an IP student, you are expected to do alot more self-study, research and project work. There are mentors and teachers who do guide the students alot, especially in lower sec. There are still a lot from the primary mainstream who needs adjustment and guidance for IP kind of structure and curriculum.I have two questions.

2) if you intend to do higher chinese in secondary level, the standard will be equally high at RI. The advantage of HCI over RI in Higher Chinese is that, there are other opportunities for you to use and be immerse in the chinese language other than the normal Chinese lessons. This could help them to improve in the language faster. The boys are expected to do compulsory debate / current affairs discussion in both Chinese and English. They are also given both chinese and english newspapers (alternating) to read in the mornings. -
my DS was very involved with HCI while in primary school. he also did fund raising for RI while in primary school. we live next door to HCI but DS chose RI for friends’ sake
to me HCI is still a great school. -

My nephew is currently in Hci year 5, and he says that it is easier to be promoted to junior college from RGS and RI then Nanyang or any other schools! RGS girls will automatically be transferred to RJC unless they do not meet very very basic requirements, like getting a pass or fulfilling their minimum CCA attendence. Yep, that's it. Hoped this helped!
nappy,
May I know how your nephew being a HCI student know so much/be so sure sure about RGS & RI's promotion criteria? I have a daughter at RGS and a son at RI but have not heard from the principals so far that as long as they get a pass and fulfill their minimum CCA attendence, they will be automatically promoted to Yr 5. :?
There are more than 4 ex-Hwa Chong JC students among my family members. From what I understand, students then were presurised to drop subjects if the school think they cannot do well in their A levels. This is so that in terms of grades, the school can maintain it's record. Of course that was during my time.
