Thanks to all for your wonderful tips again.

For ds's english, think I've hit the magical formula already. But for ds's chinese, still scratching my head how to go about doing it. :?

There's nothing unusual if ds picks up an english book to read on his own initiative. But if he is to pick up a chinese book w/o prompting, I'll straight away think that he's not feeling well cos he has never done this kind of thing before.

Oh...my dd's P1 CL teacher told her to watch 9pm Chinese drama! Hehe..she did watch selectively but the problem is to read the English subtitles.

E3, my ds doesn't want to go for the PTC, says he rather go student care to play  think it's better too, DH doesn't have patience to handle him when he whines abt waiting time etc.. sure start scolding even before mtg the teacher..

Hehe.. i like to watch travel shows.. so I get my DS to watch the taiwanese travel programs when we r at my in-laws (Starhub) every sun. NO english subtitles.. he gets frustrated because he can't process the chinese as quickly.. but I think he is improving.. I also get them to watch CNA news with me on weekends.. it has subtitles, which ds likes to read. going to try out chinese news soon.. for dramas, I worry abt the content, so not going to venture there..

            Jennifer:
Ok seriously now, for the parent-teacher session later this week, what can we expect?

1st rule: Keep to the time limit

2nd rule: Do not use the session to scold your child (wasting time here)

3rd rule: Ask for the teacher's perceived strengths and weaknesses in the child

4th rule: Ask for constructive suggestions on how to capitalise the strengths, bring out the potential and weed the weaknesses

5th rule: Ask how you as a parent can help to carry out the suggestions named in 4th rule.

6th rule: Shake the teacher's hand and wish her a good day

Thanks for the detailed suggestions Jen :>.

So taking your advice on board, can I go in front of FT and ask her, 'Just give me the single most impt thing that ds needs to improve on and how can I help him to do it?'

Whole meeting will last 3 min. Then FT and the parents behind me will be extremely impressed with this papa ..... πŸ˜„

Thanks to the rest for your advice too.
hey....sounded familiar....was what i did last year.....hahaha.....

Bringing children to the meeting is a torture to them due to the waiting time. BUT we can always make the event more fun for them. Do bring along some snacks which are usu. out of bounds or simple board games which they can play with classmates.

Abt watching Chinese info-entertainment programmes. I had a chat with my elder boy's new CL tutor. She said in sec sch, compreh passages are usu. based on historical famous pple (aka lived in a diff era and had a hard life). Becos the lifestyle then is very unimaginable for our children, it is more difficult for our children to understand the passage. Hence a good way to expose our children to the older times is to visit China or more backwards countries.

I think a cheaper way wld be to watch Mandarin travel programmes (like you hv suggested).

Soli newbie here as far as P-T session is concerned.

                  Just one more qn.

Do I get to meet just the FT? Or would I also be able to meet CL T too?

Been wanting to know how to further improve ds's CL standard.
Mark, for my dd (when she was in P1), her Ft n Ct were seated near each other in d hall, hence wen u reached d hall, i went to d T with the shortest queue first, done, n moved on to d next.
My elder dd had 4 Ts, all located at diff classes, so i had to make a decision. Went to meet FT, had to wait for 20mins. Moved on to science and then went to Math T but as she had a form class to meet, i waited for 45mins n gave up. I skipped thw Eng T n left at noon time for a nice lunch wirh kids n friends πŸ™‚

There is a std ans (based on my experience)- Read widely, Listen widely.

If you ask what types of books are suitable, the std ans: Our sch lib and community libs have a wide selection cater for all levels. Bring your child there and let him choose.

Mine doesn't watch 9pm, he watches the HK TVB dramas and reads the Eng subtitles.

Once, I taopao snack for one of my elder boy's teacher who still had not got time to eat lunch.

Teachers are also quite poor things.

So all ksp PH parents, pls ask the teacher you are seeing whether he/she needs to visit the toilet before you start asking qns πŸ˜‰

Oh, one more thing is the parking at the mkt. Do note the parking warden in charge of the carpark is very ON.

And lastly, if you think the teacher has done a good job so far, pls give your sincere thanks verbally. It will score points on behalf of your child and really make the day better for the teacher- WIN WIN situation.
