btw, is it a lot of homework in P1 ??

      daily or weekly homework ??
it's very stressful to both parents n kids if P1 already overload with homework...

      argh...scary...

      hi my62202,

Homework depends on the teacher. I understand in other P1 classes, they have homework to bring home. Thus far, my kid's homework is mainly reading (chinese textbook), a bit of art (to color). Quite relax really. But then recently they have show & tell - so I got to prepare with him.

Kindly note, in P1, they seem to be very finicky. DS had to redo portions of his maths work becos he never use ruler to draw straight line. Not quite sure why they are so focused on that - but in Rome, I'm going to do as Rome does. πŸ˜‰

I was being kaypoh and check out other school's powerpoint slide presentation to parents. It seem neatness is a criterion for Math. Did not state if marks will be deducted if not neat. Recently, I have let DD practice with the ruler more often when drawing lines

LOL. Many good primary schools are hidden in the woods. we just didn't get to know them.
Very true, it's only until kids we know get in then we'll know. Anyway, the whole experience is very teacher contingent.

          hi lionheart,

Thanks for all the good info; and understand your 'frustration' (?) at those never ending queries on psle. For me, that was an initial consideration when deciding on school, I won't know what the inner workings are like then (well, hws thread wasn't that active mah) and this is one of the more measurable qualities.

That said, I am fully cognizant that past scores are not indicative of present or future results; and for MY own kids, past psle would definitely not be indicative.

i have volunteered in 2 schools before i sent my son to HWS via 2C. i thought the same like you too. PSLE score + School Program were major considerations when deciding the school, HWS wasn't in my radar then as their PSLE was not fantastic and also very little details were make available to public. I only learnt about HWS just by parking near the old school for a few weeks, observing student in recess and class. It changed my decision.

LOL. Many good primary schools are hidden in the woods. we just didn't get to know them.

I think it's a search process for parents. Some will decide on reputation, PSLE results, achievements to decide because it's the most obvious. Some like me will apply PV to many schools to feel the vibe, converse with staff and scan forum. For me this thread was very quiet when I was scanning. So I relied on my gut feel when I was PVing in the school. I like what I feel

The T-score does bug me a bit because I'm the kind of person who likes to know everything. I a bit anal that way  I know it has nothing to do with my kid, but as I say, I'm anal that way

Truth be told, the psle thingy did bug me in the initial days. Finally DH and I concluded that it's up to us to handle our kids and provide them with whatever support they may require. And I'm glad that this thread is more active - esp with inputs from PSG. At least other researching parents will have a better idea what's going on, what are current parents' bugbears etc. Some noise better than silence.

Perhaps age catching up and i am gettin grumpy lately.. πŸ™‚

2 cents worth of thought here..

Lately, i kept receiving PM from potential HWS parents or alrdy-parents whom are concerned about PSLE results in HWS. i heard many use means to try find it; Some fabricated numbers for/against HWS.

For the benefits for HWS parents or Wannabe, the School principal shared T-scores with PSG leaders and activists. It is not a trade secret actually. Maybe some see this as a must.., but is it necessary? Does it make a difference if we know the T-score?

As i see it and the P has similar thoughts; Lets keep bad competition away from students. Allow our student try their best and achieve their potential using their own abilities with no expense in health and happiness.

              In order to have that happen, imho School has to avoid giving unnecessary pressure to students and teachers. While parents and other stakeholders give love, resource and thoughts to value-add the process;

I am an old school.. Hope this clarify why i am not responsive whenever it comes to any queries related to HWS PSLE results....

For those who can't sleep without knowing the T-score....Be assured.. the T-Score is A++ against schools of similar social-economic background.

              πŸ™‚
hi lionheart, thanks for sharing your insight abt HWS. Character development is definitely also important apart from the academic. Looks like it is a wise decision for me n wife to be PV'ing for the school - but still quite a # of hours to go.
So far I like what I observe in e school so far.
The population around e area is also getting denser with more residental developments and therefore e school will definitely become more n more popular.
I m also quite amazed by e active discussions in this forum.

Sure it is.. i hope i chip in by providing correct accurate update so that to cut down many misconceptions among parents.

My focus will be on addressing issues at School level or at least Class level.... And please Do not ask me about how to score .. what to study and how to get Band I.

These are problems that i have left to my sons to figure out. i merely facilitate and aid them to reach their goals. I just only knew that once a child is independent and he has positive characters, resilient and compassionate, he can achieve anything in life.
