Chan09:
Need some help on this question. Male and female participants were divided equally into team A, B and C. Number of males in A is equal to number of females in B. 1/5 of males were in C. There were 160 more females than males altogether. What was total number of females? :stupid:
Hi Chan09,
This is an alternative to ADoc's solution.

No. of males (Team A) = 1pHi Dharma,

No. of females (Team B) = 1p
If the total number of males in Team C (1u) is 1/5 of the total number of males, the total number of males will be 5u.
Since the males and females are divided equally into the 3 teams (A, B and C); each of the 3 teams must have the same number of participants.
We can say that
No. of females (Team A) = 1u
No. of males (Team B ) = 1u
No. of females (Team C ) = 1p
Total number of males is 5u,
1p + 1u + 1u = 5u
1p = 3u
Total no. of females = 1u + 1p + 1p = 7u
Total no. of males = 1p + 1u + 1u = 5u
Difference between females and males = 7u – 5u = 160
2u = 160
1u = 80
Total number of females = 7u = 7 x 80 = 560 -
